The Opportunity
If you’re an experienced warehouse all-rounder who enjoys forklift work, keeping things organised and taking ownership of getting the job done, this could be a great next move.
Production Packaging (PPI) manufactures corrugated cardboard packaging from its facility in Melbourne’s west. We’re looking for a capable Warehouse & Despatch Assistant to work closely with the Warehouse & Despatch Manager and help keep goods moving efficiently in and out of the business.
This is a genuinely varied role. Around 50% of your time will involve forklift operation, alongside picking and packing, loading and unloading trucks, preparing orders, despatch paperwork and general warehouse duties.
You’ll also have the opportunity to learn more of the overall despatch function, including systems and administration, so you can become a trusted second set of hands within the department.
What’s in it for you?
- $35–$40 per hour, depending on experience
- Full-time, permanent opportunity
- Monday to Friday, 6:30am–2:30pm
- Overtime opportunities when required
- A varied role where you won’t be doing the same task all day
- Work closely with an experienced Warehouse & Despatch Manager
- Opportunity to learn more of the despatch operation and build your skills
- Get involved across warehouse, despatch and occasionally production
- Team bonus opportunities
- Employee recognition and prizes
- Regular team BBQs
- Small, down-to-earth team where your contribution matters
PPI believes in sharing success with its team. When quarterly company targets are achieved, eligible employees share in a team bonus.
What will you be doing?
Reporting to the Warehouse & Despatch Manager, Adam, you’ll help manage the day-to-day flow of stock, finished goods and deliveries.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Operating forklifts for approximately 50% of the role
- Picking and packing orders from paper-based pick slips
- Loading outgoing trucks and unloading incoming deliveries
- Working with high warehouse racking
- Preparing orders in advance for upcoming despatches
- Wrapping and strapping pallets ready for transport
- Receiving and logging orders and jobs
- Creating despatch dockets and assisting with invoicing
- Maintaining accurate warehouse and despatch records
- Keeping the warehouse clean, organised and safe
- Assisting with waste management
- Supporting production and other departments when required
- Learning the broader despatch function and providing support when the Warehouse & Despatch Manager is away
On a typical day, the warehouse can receive four to six incoming trucks and load up to six outgoing trucks, so you’ll need to enjoy working at a good pace and staying organised.
About you
We’re looking for someone who is motivated, practical and comfortable taking ownership.
You’ll ideally bring:
- Previous warehouse, despatch or stores experience
- A current forklift licence
- Strong and confident forklift operating skills
- Experience loading and unloading trucks
- Confidence working around high warehouse racking
- Picking, packing and order preparation experience
- Valuable communication skills
- Basic computer literacy, including Microsoft Office
- Experience using a CRM, ERP or warehouse/order management system
- Good attention to detail with paperwork and despatch documentation
- The initiative to see what needs doing and get on with it
- A willingness to help across different areas when required
- A reliable, team-focused approach
PPI uses NetSuite to receive and log orders and jobs, create dockets and assist with invoicing. NetSuite experience would be useful, but it isn’t essential if you have worked with a similar ERP or warehouse system.
Experience operating a counterbalance forklift is important.
Experience with a Bendi/double-reach forklift would be particularly valuable given the warehouse configuration and high racking.
An HR or MR truck licence would also be highly regarded, as it would allow you to provide occasional cover for delivery drivers.
The kind of person who will do well here
Success in this role means taking ownership, staying ahead of the workload and getting things done. You’ll have freedom and autonomy once you understand the operation, so initiative is important.
You’ll work closely with the Warehouse and Despatch Manager and the wider PPI team, so being approachable, communicating well and being prepared to lend a hand are just as important as your technical warehouse skills.
If you like variety, enjoy a busy environment and want to become more than simply a forklift driver or pick-packer, this role offers plenty to learn.
Hours
Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 6:30am–2:30pm.
During busy periods, the team may commence at 5:30am to accommodate overtime. Additional weekend work may also be available from time to time.
