Engineering Drafting Traineeship
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified position
Darwin, Larrakia Country | Full-time, paid 24-month traineeship
Tracks Integrated Services (Tracks IS) is recruiting for this traineeship on behalf of our client, a well-respected engineering company in Darwin. It’s part of a global engineering group, so the career can go a long way from here. We’re managing the recruitment, and we’ll support you from your first enquiry through to your first day.
Every road, water main and jetty in the Territory started as a drawing on someone’s screen. That could be your screen.
Did you like Design and Tech or technical drawing at school? Ever designed a house in The Sims, built something in the shed or played around with 3D modelling? Are you the one who notices when something’s a bit off? Drafting could be your thing, and you can get paid while you learn it.
This has worked before
We recruited a trainee for this company last time. He finished his traineeship and is now a Junior Drafter there. Now it’s someone else’s turn.
So what does a drafter actually do?
Before anything gets built, someone has to draw it up properly. That could be a water main for a remote community, a jetty, a dam upgrade or campgrounds in a national park. The drawings need exact measurements, levels, where the pipes run and what materials to use. The builders work from them.
Engineers do the design and the calculations. Drafters turn their rough designs into clear, accurate drawings that people can build from.
As a trainee you’ll:
- join the Darwin civil team and work under a Senior Civil Engineer
- learn drafting software from scratch
- start on simpler drawings with someone beside you, then build up as you get confident
- check your own work and speak up when something doesn’t look right
- help keep project documents in order
- share ideas and learn alongside the team
What you get
- Paid from day one, plus super,
while you train
- Full-time work with a 24-month traineeship
- A Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting, a qualification you keep for life
- Structured training both on the job and off the job
- First Nations mentoring through the GTNT Apprenticeship Network
- Access to a national network of mentors inside the company
- Adaptable working, and a team that takes having fun seriously
- Somewhere to go next: Junior Drafter, then civil design or engineering if you want it
Is this for you?
Most of your day is at a computer, and the details matter. A few millimetres out can cause problems once building starts. If you like getting things exactly right and can stay focused, you’ll go well.
You don’t need experience. You do need to:
- identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- be confident on a computer
- be interested in a career in building, engineering or design
- be able to talk to people and ask questions when you’re stuck
It helps if you’ve:
- finished Year 12, or are close to finishing
- got good at juggling a few things at once and being on time
Didn’t finish Year 12? Still get in touch. It’s not a deal breaker.
Not sure you’re ready? Apply anyway.
You don’t need to know anything about drafting yet. That’s what the traineeship is for.
