About Jewish House and the role
Jewish House is a Sydney-based social services and community support charity, which also provides NDIS support coordination. It now employs more than 80 people.
The HR Advisor will be the organisation's sole HR professional. The role covers both HR operations and staff support. It is a hands-on generalist position that needs someone who can work independently, use good judgement, and handle confidential matters with care.
Being on site each day means staff and managers have a consistent, visible point of contact for HR questions.
Key responsibilities
HR operations and systems
• Prepare and issue employment contracts, variations and letters (offers, changes to hours or role, terminations).
• Maintain accurate employee records in Employment Hero, including onboarding flows, policies, documents and leave records.
• Coordinate onboarding and offboarding, including inductions, exit interviews and return of equipment and access.
• Apply the correct modern award and classification to each role (e.g. the SCHADS Award),
and keep position descriptions current.
• Provide HR data and reports for management and the board when needed (headcount, turnover, leave liability).
Compliance and screening
• Track and renew NDIS Worker Screening Checks, Working With Children Checks, police checks and other required clearances.

• Track mandatory training and keep records ready for NDIS and funding body audits.
• Make sure HR practices meet the Fair Work Act, National Employment Standards and relevant awards.
Employee support and relations
• Be the first point of contact for staff and managers on HR questions, policies and entitlements.
• Advise and support managers on performance management, probation reviews, grievances and disciplinary processes.
• Support staff wellbeing, including connecting staff to the Employee Assistance Program where one is in place.
• Escalate complex matters (investigations, potential legal risk) to the CEO and external HR or legal advisers.
Work health and safety
• Support WHS processes, including incident reporting, hazard registers and the WHS committee.
• Manage workers compensation claims and return-to-work plans, liaising with the insurer.
Recruitment
• Coordinate recruitment with hiring managers:
job ads, shortlisting, interviews, reference checks and offers.
Policies and continuous improvement
• Review, update and roll out HR policies and procedures.
• Identify gaps in current HR practices and recommend improvements, starting with an HR audit in the first three months.
Selection criteria
Essential
• Tertiary qualification in HR, business or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• At least 3 to 5 years of generalist HR experience, ideally including time as a sole or lead HR person.
• Working knowledge of the Fair Work Act, National Employment Standards, SCHADS Award and other modern awards, including award interpretation.
• Experience handling employee relations matters, such as performance management and grievances.
• Hands-on experience with an HR information system, preferably Employment Hero.
• High level of discretion and confidentiality.
• Clear written and verbal communication, and the ability to build trust with staff at all levels.
• Current NDIS Worker Screening Check, Police Check and Working With Children Check, or willingness to obtain them.
Desirable
• Experience in the not-for-profit, community services, disability or NDIS sector.
• Workers’ compensation and return-to-work experience.
• Understanding of, or sensitivity to, Jewish community values and the Jewish calendar.
