The German Village Shop
Hahndorf
About Us – The German Village Group
We are a passionate team of entrepreneurs with big aspirations to grow our retail presence in Hahndorf through a unique selection of German-inspired stores.
Proud of our German heritage, our mission is to ensure every visitor to Hahndorf enjoys a genuine taste of German culture.
Our philosophy is:
Education + Entertainment = Experience!
A visit to our stores is more than shopping. It's an opportunity to discover something compelling, learn about German culture and leave with a memorable experience.
The Role
We are looking for motivated, capable people to join our small and hands-on retail team.
This is a varied role that goes well beyond serving customers and operating a register. Our team members are expected to learn about our products, understand our systems, solve problems, use initiative and work independently while knowing when to ask for assistance.
You will develop skills across customer service, sales, product knowledge, stock processing and inventory management, with the opportunity to take on increasing responsibility as you become familiar with the business.
Because we are a small team, every team member makes a difference. We value people who notice what needs doing, think things through and take pride in getting things right.

What You'll Be Doing
Promotional Retail
Our stores are designed to be an experience, not simply a place to make a purchase.
You will:
· Wear traditional German attire as part of our store uniforms
· Learn about and confidently discuss the history,
culture and uses of our products
· Educate visitors about products including cuckoo clocks, German Christmas decorations, candles and other specialty items
· Engage with tourists and create memorable experiences
· Represent our stores professionally – including being comfortable interacting with visitors who may ask for photographs
General Retail
You will also be responsible for:
· Providing friendly and knowledgeable customer service
· Processing sales and operating the point-of-sale system
· Learning and applying product knowledge
· Receiving and processing stock
· Assisting with inventory management and stock organisation
· Responding to customer enquiries both in-store and by email
· Maintaining presentation and cleanliness standards
· Identifying tasks that need to be completed and getting on with them without always needing to be directed
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who is:
· A quick and willing learner who enjoys developing new knowledge and skills
· Proactive and able to recognise what needs doing without waiting to be asked
· Reliable and accountable – if you say you'll do something, you follow through
· Observant and detail-oriented, particularly when handling stock, transactions and customer enquiries
· A clear communicator who can listen carefully and explain information confidently
· Comfortable solving problems and thinking through situations before asking for assistance
· Friendly and engaging with customers from a wide range of backgrounds
· Adaptable, as the role involves a variety of tasks rather than doing the same thing every shift
· Comfortable learning about unfamiliar products and discussing them with customers
· Comfortable working both as part of a small team and independently
Experience
Previous retail or customer service experience is valued, but it is not essential for the right applicant.
What matters most to us is your attitude, ability to learn, reliability, initiative and willingness to take responsibility.
If you have limited retail experience but can demonstrate that you are capable, curious and willing to learn, we encourage you to apply.
Application Requirements - Cover Letter
