Osborne Richardson have been partnering with Gympie Regional Council for years now, and we're chuffed to be helping their Environment Services team with a cracking short-term opportunity right in our home patch.
Council is after an experienced environmental professional to provide internal environmental referral advice on development applications while one of the team is away. This is a flexible, referral-based engagement through to the end of 2026, with roughly 5 referrals landing each week. Simpler applications take 1 to 2 hours to review and advise on, and larger proposals take several hours. The work can be done remotely unless you're close enough to pop into Gympie, and council is open to how the arrangement is structured.
What you'll be doing
- Reviewing development applications (Material Change of Use, Reconfiguring a Lot, Operational Works and the like) and preparing internal environmental referral advice
- Assessing proposals against the planning scheme, its environmental overlays and relevant state and local environmental legislation
- Recommending conditions and giving clear, defensible advice to Planning, Compliance and Infrastructure teams
- Preparing environmental assessments for Council projects on Council land as required
- Providing regular updates and reports to the Coordinator Environment Services
- Building positive working relationships with internal teams, applicants and government agencies
What you'll bring
1. A degree, postgraduate qualification or diploma in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Planning or similar
2. Demonstrated experience preparing environmental referral advice or assessments on development applications, ideally in Queensland local government or consulting
3. Sound knowledge of environmental legislation relevant to local government, including the Queensland planning framework
4. Highly developed report writing skills, with clear and concise advice
5. The ability to work autonomously, manage your own workload and meet assessment timeframes
6. Solid interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to negotiate outcomes with internal and external stakeholders
7. A current Queensland C class driver's licence
What's on offer: flexible, referral-based work you can largely do remotely, a supportive council team, and a short-term engagement through to 31 December 2026 that's perfect for an experienced consultant or someone wanting to keep their hand in.
