About Us

Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Service (BRAMS) is a well-established Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation that has been supporting the Broome community for over 40 years. Headquartered in Broome, Western Australia, BRAMS provides holistic, culturally safe primary healthcare, aged care, and community programs to Aboriginal people throughout the Kimberley region.

With a strong focus on person-centred, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care, BRAMS delivers services designed around the needs of Aboriginal individuals and families. Our multidisciplinary teams work collaboratively to improve health outcomes and promote wellbeing across the lifespan.

Our vision: Healthy People – Strong Community – Bright Future.

About the Role

Funded under the Cancer Australia 2026 Supporting People with Cancer grant (GO8073), this role delivers the Engaging Older Aboriginal Men project, providing culturally safe, relationship-based support to Aboriginal men living with cancer in Broome and the wider Kimberley – so that men remain engaged in their care and no man falls out of care.

Working alongside the BRAMS Cancer Support Team, you will use proactive outreach, flexible and informal appointment models, practical support and culturally appropriate cancer education, and strengthen continuity between hospital-based cancer services and community-based primary care. The role prioritises men who are disengaged, at risk of disengagement, or experiencing complex social needs, recognising that engagement often occurs outside traditional clinic settings.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

- Providing culturally safe, relationship-based and compassionate support to Aboriginal men living with cancer, and to their families and carers.
- Identifying and engaging men who are disengaged from or underserved by mainstream cancer services, including those facing geographic isolation or complex psychosocial needs.
- Supporting men to navigate and remain engaged across cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and survivorship.
- Providing proactive outreach, including home visits and flexible, informal appointments, outside traditional clinic settings.
- Coordinating transport, accommodation and logistics for cancer-related appointments, including travel between the Kimberley and treatment centres.

- Providing practical support between appointments, including assistance with medications, food access, transport and connection to wraparound supports.
- Delivering culturally appropriate cancer education to men, families and carers on diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.
- Strengthening continuity of care between hospital-based cancer services and community-based primary care, and liaising between men, families, clinicians and external providers.
- Accurately completing documentation and reporting in line with organisational and grant requirements, including data to support reporting to Cancer Australia.

About You

- Being a male Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under the Equal Chance Act 1984 (WA), as the role delivers culturally safe support for Aboriginal men (men’s business).

- Ability to provide culturally safe, compassionate and practical support to men and families affected by cancer.

- Ability to work independently in outreach and community-based settings across Broome and the wider Kimberley.
- Ability to manage sensitive information confidentially.
- A current Australian issued Driver’s Licence, or the ability to obtain one, given the outreach and travel requirements of the role.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a National Police Check and a Working with Children Check, as required under the grant.

Desirable

- Experience working in a health,

community support or patient liaison role.
- Knowledge of cancer care pathways, screening programs and treatment processes.
