Western Downs Digital Park Western Downs Digital Park is a master-planned digital and energy precinct in regional Queensland. Located close to major power infrastructure near Dalby, the campus will bring together AI-ready data centres, high-voltage infrastructure, large scale energy storage and a purpose built operating environment. The role Zerra DC is seeking a Senior Energy Storage Engineer to provide technical leadership for the large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems required across Western Downs Digital Park. Reporting to the Technical Director, you will act as the project's principal specialist for energy storage, leading BESS architecture, design assurance and integration from concept selection and technical specification through procurement, detailed design, manufacture, testing, commissioning and operational handover. Working across engineering, energy, grid connection, commercial, construction and operations, you will integrate the BESS solution with the campus high-voltage network, data-centre electrical architecture, energy-management systems, SCADA and operational requirements. What you will lead
• Define the BESS design basis, functional requirements, system architecture and performance criteria.
• Lead the sizing and technical evaluation of battery systems, power conversion systems, transformers, switchgear, auxiliary systems and balance of plant.
• Develop and review specifications, single-line diagrams, layouts, control philosophies, operating modes and performance models.
• Lead technical engagement with integrators, battery manufacturers, equipment suppliers, consultants, contractors and network stakeholders.
• Support bid evaluation,



vendor selection, technical schedules, performance guarantees and warranty negotiations.
• Assess technology, degradation, augmentation, availability, efficiency and whole-of-life performance.
• Ensure the design addresses thermal management, fire and life safety, emergency response, isolation and maintainability.
• Coordinate factory design reviews, FAT, site acceptance testing, commissioning, grid-compliance testing and integrated systems testing.
• Support operational readiness, maintenance strategy, training, technical documentation and handover. What you will bring
• A degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Energy Engineering or a related discipline.
• At least 10 years of power-systems or energy-infrastructure experience, including substantial responsibility for utility-scale or large commercial and industrial BESS projects.
• Strong knowledge of battery systems, PCS, transformers, switchgear, protection, EMS, SCADA and balance-of-plant design.
• Experience taking BESS projects from concept and specification through procurement, detailed design, manufacture, testing, commissioning and handover.
• Working knowledge of degradation, augmentation, availability, efficiency, warranties and lifecycle considerations.
• A strong understanding of BESS safety, thermal management, fire and life-safety requirements and emergency response.
• The ability to coordinate and challenge consultants, contractors, OEMs, network stakeholders and senior project leaders.
• CPEng, NER and RPEQ registration, or eligibility to obtain them, will be well regarded.
