We are taking on 3 R&D; Engineering Interns at Echidna, based in office in our North Rocks lab. Starting immediately. This is not a corporate coffee-fetching internship. We operate as a small, fast-moving skunkworks lab. There is zero hierarchy, which means everybody builds, tests, breaks, and fixes things. You will have substantial autonomy, direct impact on physical hardware, and real responsibility from day one. (Past interns have loved it for exactly this reason.) What the Environment Looks Like
• Hands-on & On-Prem: Most of your time will be spent physically in the lab in North Rocks building and iterating.
• Generalist over Specialist: We need people who thrive across hardware boundaries and aren't afraid to pick up a tool they haven't used before.
• Collaborative yet Self-Directed: You can run with a problem independently or jump in with the rest of the team to solve a blocker. What We Are Looking For We don’t expect you to have mastered everything on this list, but you should have genuine, hands-on experience across several of these areas:
• Electronics & Integration: Board-level troubleshooting, wiring harnesses, bench instrumentation.
• Prototyping & Assembly: Solid soldering skills, mechanical assembly, component fit-up.
• Mechanical & CAD: 3D CAD design, rapid prototyping, and running 3D printers.
• Lab Discipline: Systematic bench testing, data collection, and physical debugging. Who Fits Best
• Inquisitive and critical: We have no use for yes-men. If an architecture is flawed or a mechanical design doesn't make sense,
speak up and defend your reasoning.
• Diligent and practical: You take pride in neat wire runs, clean solder joints, and solid documentation.
• Comfortable in ambiguity: In a skunkworks environment, requirements change and things fail. You adapt quickly. Our workplace You'll be working in a real life early stage startup that has a product in the market and others in development poised to make a significant leap in how AI interprets and interacts with the real world. We believe that there is no such thing as failure, as long as lessons are learnt. We provide a diverse, inclusive and safe working environment where everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute, innovate and be creative.
How to Apply
To apply, email
[email protected] with the subject line R&D; Intern – [Your Name]. Please attach your CV, a brief cover letter, and the direct answers to these two screening questions:
• Background & Skillset: What have you actually built or fixed across electronics, mechanics, or firmware? (Links to portfolios, personal builds, or GitHub/CAD repos welcome).
• The Honest Assessment: Looking at the broad scope above, where do you fall short? Tell us candidly where your weak spots are and what you don't know yet. Note: Due to the high volume of applications, only candidates shortlisted for an interview will be contacted. #EngineeringInternship #HardwareEngineering #Robotics #RapidPrototyping #SydneyTech #Skunkworks #MechanicalEngineering #ElectronicsEngineering
