Haven Care Australia

Canberra

Position description

The Recreational Officer works with people with disability in Haven Care Australia’s Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes and in the community. The officer helps each participant choose how to spend their leisure time, keep up interests and friendships, and try activities they would like to explore.

Appointment details. HR will confirm the reporting manager, work location, employment type and agreed days and hours in the employment agreement.

Plan activities with participants

Meet with each participant to learn what they enjoy, who they want to spend time with and what they would like to try. Use their preferred way of communicating, including photos, objects or communication devices where helpful.

Develop an accessible activity calendar with participants and House Team Leaders. Offer individual and small-group options and respect each person’s decision to join, decline or change their mind.

Make room for activities that matter to one person as well as shared interests. This might mean helping someone return to a local choir, join a social sports club or garden at home.

Organise and lead activities

Lead recreation sessions at home and in the community. Adapt the pace, equipment and environment so each person can take part in the way they choose.

Work with the House Team Leader and rostering team to confirm transport, staffing and equipment before an outing. Check venue access, including toilets and a quiet space where needed.

Plan within the approved activity budget. Explain any personal costs, such as entry fees, and obtain the participant’s agreement before booking. Seek approval for expenses outside your authority.

Build relationships with local clubs, libraries, cultural groups and recreation centres. With the participant’s consent, arrange introductions and follow up if they want to return.

Record the activity, support provided, participant feedback and any follow-up in MYP. Tell the next shift about changes they need to know.

Selection criteria
