Hydrogen Group is seeking an experienced Lead Java Developer for a six-month rolling contract with a financial services client in Sydney. This is an opportunity to help build a cloud-native platform in a greenfield environment, combining hands-on software engineering with technical leadership. The successful candidate will guide delivery from system design through development and production, while supporting the growth and effectiveness of the wider engineering team.

About The Company
Hydrogen Group connects talented professionals with opportunities across specialist markets. For this engagement, you will work with a financial services client developing a modern cloud-native platform. The client is building in a greenfield environment, creating an opportunity to contribute to foundational technical decisions and establish effective engineering practices from the outset.

About The Role
As Lead Java Developer, you will take a central role in shaping and delivering high-performing services and APIs. You will combine strong Core Java development skills with practical experience in Spring Boot, microservices and cloud-scale environments. Working across the software development lifecycle, you will help translate system requirements into sound technical designs, deliver reliable implementations and support services through testing and deployment. This role is suited to a developer who enjoys remaining close to the code while taking responsibility for technical direction and team outcomes. You will assess architectural options, make pragmatic technology decisions, and mentor less experienced developers. You will also contribute to improving the team’s engineering capability,

productivity and consistency. The position is based in Sydney and offered as a six-month rolling contract, with the potential for a longer-term engagement. Qualifications
• Robust hands-on experience with Core Java and professional software development.
• Proven ability to build high-performing APIs using Java and Spring Boot.
• Substantial experience with the Spring framework and Spring Boot in production environments.
• Solid understanding of microservices architecture and the considerations involved in building and operating distributed systems.
• Experience working with relational database management systems (RDBMS).
• Extensive experience with version control and collaborative development tools, such as Git and Bitbucket.
• Practical experience with CI/CD pipelines, code reviews and quality-focused development practices.
• Essential experience with infrastructure as code, particularly Terraform, ideally in a greenfield environment.
• Demonstrated technical leadership, sound judgment and the ability to mentor and support other developers. Responsibilities
• Lead technical delivery from initial system design through implementation, testing and production deployment.
• Develop and maintain robust, high-performing Java services and APIs using Spring Boot.

• Contribute to the architecture of a cloud-native platform and help establish effective patterns for microservices.
• Evaluate architectural approaches and recommend pragmatic solutions aligned with delivery needs.
• Take ownership of the end-to-end software development lifecycle, including design, coding, testing and deployment.
• Use Terraform and infrastructure-as-code practices to support platform foundations and repeatable environments.
• Promote effective use of Git, Bitbucket, CI/CD and code review across the team.
• Mentor junior developers, share knowledge and help strengthen the team’s engineering capability and productivity. Benefits
• Six-month rolling contract with the potential for a longer-term engagement.
• The opportunity to lead technical direction and influence foundational platform decisions.
• A hands-on leadership position balancing engineering delivery with mentoring.
• Exposure to a greenfield cloud-native platform within the financial services sector.
• The chance to contribute across the full software development lifecycle. If this opportunity matches your experience and interests, submit your application to be considered. The Hydrogen Group team can discuss the engagement and next steps with suitable candidates. Equal Opportunity Hydrogen Group is committed to fair and equitable recruitment. Applicants will be considered on their skills, experience and suitability for the role. We welcome applications from qualified candidates with diverse backgrounds and are committed to an inclusive selection process.
