About the Team The Quality Engineering Team (QET) is a high-impact, collaborative platform and enablement team focused on improving how quality is embedded across digital services. We partner with engineering teams to provide the frameworks, tooling, patterns and coaching that help teams build reliable, accessible and high-performing products with confidence. Unlike traditional testing teams that operate at the end of the delivery cycle, we work upstream with engineering teams to identify risks early, improve development practices and enable teams to take ownership of quality. We collaborate closely with product engineering teams, engineering leaders, platform teams and specialists across accessibility, security and design to continuously improve the way software is delivered.
Joining QET offers a unique opportunity to solve quality challenges at scale. Rather than focusing on a single product, you'll help build capabilities, influence engineering practices and create reusable solutions that support multiple teams and customer-facing services. You will also have the opportunity to explore emerging engineering approaches, including the responsible use of AI to enhance software delivery and quality engineering outcomes.
About the Role
We are seeking a curious, pragmatic and hands-on Senior QA Automation Engineer to help shape the future of quality engineering across the organisation.
This is a senior engineering role that combines platform development, automation engineering, technical leadership, problem-solving and team enablement. You will play a key role in evolving our quality engineering ecosystem, building scalable automation capabilities and helping engineering teams receive fast, meaningful feedback throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
Working within QET, you will contribute to the evolution of our shared automation framework, improve developer experience and CI/CD integration, and establish engineering patterns that enable teams to build quality into their products from the outset. You will influence technical direction, mentor engineers, challenge traditional approaches where appropriate and help drive continuous improvement across our engineering community.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop reusable automation capabilities using Playwright and TypeScript across API and UI testing.
- Enhance shared automation frameworks, libraries, tooling and overall developer experience.
- Build and improve CI/CD integrations that provide fast, actionable quality feedback to engineering teams.
- Develop capabilities across accessibility testing, performance testing, test data management, reporting, service-level testing and mocking solutions.
- Review code and contribute to technical design decisions, engineering standards and best practices.
- Partner with product engineering teams to assess quality risks and determine appropriate testing strategies.
- Troubleshoot complex automation, framework and pipeline issues, identifying scalable and sustainable solutions.
- Create reference implementations, reusable patterns and documentation that empower teams to become self-sufficient.
- Facilitate technical workshops, coding dojos, pairing sessions and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Collaborate with engineers, engineering managers, platform teams and specialists across accessibility, security and other disciplines.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, tools and engineering approaches, including opportunities to responsibly leverage AI to improve productivity and quality.
- Influence the strategic direction of quality engineering, mentor team members and contribute to a culture of engineering excellence.
What we’re looking for We're looking for a hands-on senior engineer who loves solving complex quality engineering problems and creating scalable solutions that make an impact across multiple teams. You bring deep technical knowledge, strong problem-solving skills and the ability to influence others through collaboration and expertise. You're curious by nature, open to new ideas and technologies, and passionate about enabling teams to take ownership of quality throughout the software development lifecycle.
To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:
- Strong hands-on experience with TypeScript and JavaScript.
- Proven experience using Playwright or a comparable modern automation framework.
- Strong API and UI test automation expertise.
- Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and source control platforms.
- Demonstrated experience building or significantly contributing to reusable automation frameworks, engineering tooling or platform capabilities.
- Strong technical problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex engineering challenges.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to influence technical decisions and work effectively across multiple engineering teams.
Desirable
- Experience with accessibility and/or performance testing.
- Experience with GitLab CI/CD, cloud environments and developer tooling.
- Experience mentoring, coaching or enabling engineers in quality engineering practices.
- Practical experience with AI-assisted development tools and modern engineering workflows.
