About our client
An independent test house for mobile networks, established in 2014 and headquartered in Sydney. It tests the RF components, antennas and active antenna systems that carriers rely on, and builds fully tested sector assemblies so faults are caught before equipment reaches site.
Purpose of the role
The Technician builds and tests antenna sector assemblies, so carriers receive equipment that is proven before it reaches a tower. The role combines assembly to instructions (on an app) with automated RF and fibre testing, and includes training in new methods where needed.
Key responsibilities
The work covers three areas: building systems, measuring them and keeping the workshop running.
Assembly
- Mechanically assemble RF communication systems, including complete antenna sectors
- Run cabling, connect fibre optics and connect RF cables to antenna ports
- Follow assembly instructions and specifications, using hand tools
Testing and measurement
- Run automated RF and optical fibre tests on assembled equipment
- Take measurements on telecommunications equipment using RF, digital and mechanical test gear
- Understand automated test results, such as return loss, isolation, dynamic PIM and fibre connectivity, and spot when something looks wrong
- Record results accurately and flag faulty or non-conforming components
Workshop, quality and safety
- Complete general workshop duties,
including unpacking deliveries
- Follow procedures closely, with no shortcuts
- Take on training and current methods as the work changes
- Follow health and safety rules and other company policies
- Complete other duties as delegated
Skills and experience
A telco background and sharp technical thinking are the core requirements. No trade is needed, and experience with RF test instruments is a bonus.
Essential
- Intelligent and quick to learn, with the judgement to question a test result
- Mechanical or electrical assembly skills, and efficiency with hand tools
- Ability to follow assembly instructions, specifications and written procedures closely
- Strong attention to detail and reliable record keeping
- Comfortable working as part of a team
- Full working rights in Australia
Desirable
- Hands-on telecommunications experience, such as mobile network, RF, fibre or antenna work
- Experience with RF test instruments, including spectrum, PIM and network analysers
- Experience connecting and testing optical fibre
- Familiarity with antennas, radios and antenna line components
- LF License (Counter balance Forklift)
Working conditions
All work is onsite at Castle Hill site, in a very clean workshop and test lab. The work is hands-on and includes lifting up to 20kg.
