For the Lawyer Who Wants Their Work to Count
You may already have the skills for this role, even if you haven’t worked in a community legal service before.
Perhaps you’ve built your experience in debt recovery, insolvency, commercial disputes or broader civil litigation. You know how to untangle difficult problems, manage sensitive matters and give clients explicit, practical advice. But you’re ready to use those skills somewhere they can have a very different kind of impact.
The Organisation
Women’s Legal Service Queensland is one of the state’s leading community legal services, providing legal assistance, advocacy and support to women across Queensland. Known for its collaborative culture, strong supervision and genuine commitment to sustainable legal careers, WLSQ offers lawyers the opportunity to undertake meaningful work while maintaining balance and flexibility.
The Work Itself
Working across consumer and civil law, you’ll provide practical legal advice, assistance, casework and ongoing representation across matters including consumer protection, debt and related civil law issues. You’ll work directly with clients who may be navigating complex or high-stress circumstances, taking the time to understand both their legal and broader needs and providing clear, practical advice about their options.
Risk and safety considerations form an important part of the work, particularly where clients are experiencing domestic and family violence. You’ll work collaboratively with WLSQ’s internal Social Work team and external services where additional support or specialist assistance is required.
Why WLSQ?
This role offers the opportunity to undertake challenging and rewarding legal work without the pressures often associated with private practice.
- No billable targets
- Flexible working arrangements
- Part-time of Full-time options available
- Additional gifted leave between Christmas and New Year
- Attractive salary packaging options
- Supportive supervision and mentoring
- Genuine opportunities for professional development
- Purpose-driven work with lasting community impact
Could This Be Your Pivot?
You’ll have 2+ years’ PAE and an unrestricted practising certificate, with experience that gives you a strong grounding in areas such as debt recovery, consumer law, civil litigation, insolvency, disputes or another relevant area of practice.
You don’t necessarily need to have followed a traditional community legal or consumer law pathway. What matters is your ability to work through complex legal issues, communicate with clients with clarity and empathy, exercise sound judgement and provide practical advice.
You’ll be comfortable working with people experiencing vulnerability or significant personal and financial stress, and genuinely motivated by the opportunity to use your legal skills in a more purpose-driven environment.
