Caring with Passion – About IHM
The Institute of Health & Management (IHM) is a TEQSA-registered Australian higher education provider (PRV14040, CRICOS 03407G), delivering nursing, health and management courses from campuses in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane. Powered by Arizona State University (ASU), IHM combines academic rigour with simulation-based learning and contemporary digital education.
Our purpose is Caring with Passion. Our values are Innovation, Caring and Excellence, underpinned by Integrity – honesty, openness and trust. We exist to prepare nurses who practise person-centred, compassionate and culturally safe care and who become trusted members of the communities they serve.
The Bachelor of Nursing is IHM's flagship course, approved by TEQSA and accredited by ANMAC. The course includes a discrete, compulsory subject on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' history, culture, and health, and embeds culturally protected practice throughout.
About the Role
This is an opportunity to shape how a new generation of nurses understands, respects and cares for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families and communities.
As Lecturer – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, you will lead the teaching of the Bachelor of Nursing's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health subject and help embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges, perspectives and cultural safety across the course. The subject is grounded in the Nursing and Midwifery Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Curriculum Framework.
Registration as a nurse is not required for this role. Your expertise comes from your identity, community connection, cultural knowledge and professional experience. You will work alongside registered nurse academics, who teach the clinical nursing content of the course.
You may also teach Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content in other IHM courses, including the Diploma of Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Social Work, as allocated.
Key Responsibilities
1 Teaching and learning
- Coordinate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health subject in the Bachelor of Nursing and teach it through lectures, tutorials, yarning circles, case studies, and online learning.
- Design and mark assessment, give timely and constructive feedback, and take part in moderation.
- Create a culturally safe learning environment in which all students can reflect on their own cultural values, assumptions and biases.
- Contribute Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content to other subjects, in partnership with the lecturers who teach them.
2 Curriculum and cultural safety
- Review and develop the subject and related content, consistent with the Nursing and Midwifery Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Curriculum Framework and the ANMAC Registered Nurse Accreditation Standards 2019.
- Advise the Course Coordinator and Head of School on embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and cultural safety across the course,
and contribute evidence for accreditation and course review.
- Support cultural safety learning for academic and professional staff.
3 Community engagement
- Build respectful, reciprocal relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Elders, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and organisations such as CATSINaM.
- Support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation on the Bachelor of Nursing Course Advisory Committee.
- Facilitate guest speakers and community voices in teaching, with appropriate cultural protocols and recognition.
4 Student support
- Act as a point of contact and cultural support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, working with Student Support.
- Contribute to strategies that attract, support and retain Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
5 Scholarship and service

This expertise will be assessed under IHM's academic staff qualifications and equivalence process (HES Framework Standard 3.2).
- Deep knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contemporary health and social issues, including the impact of colonisation, racism and intergenerational trauma, and the importance of self-determination.
