Job description
- Position is available in: QLD, ACT, VIC, NSW
- Australian Citizenship Required
DFP Recruitment is seeking a Lead Data Modeller to drive enterprise data modelling initiatives across a range of projects and strategic programs. Working closely with architects, engineers, analysts and business stakeholders, you will lead the design, governance and optimisation of data models that support modern data platforms, reporting and analytics capabilities. This role plays a key part in establishing best-practice data standards, ensuring data quality and enabling scalable, data-driven decision-making across the organisation.
Key duties and responsibilities:
- Lead the design and governance of enterprise semantic models, certified datasets, KPIs, and business metrics.
- Engage with business stakeholders and data architects to understand business requirements and translate them into logical, dimensional and semantic data model.
- Design and develop enterprise grade dimensional models using start schema principles, including fact tables, dimensions, relationships, hierarchies and appropriate data granularity.
- Develop and optimise analytical data models within data warehouse, including presentation layer tables, views and SQL transformations to support semantic model requirements.
- Design, develop and maintain reusable and scalable semantic models in BI tools to support enterprise reporting and analytics.
- Define and implement business measures, KPIs, calculations and reusable business logic.
- Collaborate with data engineering teams to identify source data requirements, resolve data modelling challenges and ensure data is structured appropriately for analytical consumption.
- Optimise semantic model performance including relationships, cardinality, filter propagation and underlying database query performance.
- Work closely with reporting and analytics teams to enable consumption of governed semantic models without duplicating business logic across individual reports.
Essential criteria
- Extensive experience leading enterprise data modelling activities within large and complex data environments, with a strong understanding of enterprise data modelling principles, naming conventions, metadata management, model documentation and governance standards.
- Proven ability to analyse complex business requirements, identify business entities, relationships, measures, KPIs and dimensions, and translate these into logical, physical and semantic data models.
- Solid hands-on experience designing and developing analytical data models in Snowflake, including presentation layer design, complex SQL transformations, query optimisation, and validation of semantic models against business requirements to ensure accuracy and consistency of business metrics.
- Demonstrated proficiency in data modelling tools and techniques, including ER modelling, dimensional modelling, data normalisation, and the use of ERWIN or equivalent modelling tools.
- Extensive experience architecting and developing scalable semantic data models that support self-service reporting, analytics and business intelligence solutions, including Power BI and similar platforms.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to conduct workshops, collaborate across technical and business teams, and present complex technical concepts to senior stakeholders.
Desirable criteria
- Experience working with cloud data platforms including AWS, Databricks, Snowflake, MS Fabric, Redshift or similar technologies.
- Experience supporting enterprise architecture, data strategy or large-scale data transformation programs.
- Knowledge of data governance, metadata management, master data management and data quality frameworks.
- Previous experience working within the Australian Government or other highly regulated environments.
