Melbourne CBD | Permanent | Hybrid Working
We’re partnering with an established technology business to appoint an experienced Database Architect to take ownership of database architecture, technical discovery and the ongoing evolution of a complex enterprise software platform.
This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys getting under the hood of established systems, understanding how applications and databases interact, uncovering undocumented architecture and designing robust, scalable data-driven solutions.
The initial focus will be a significant discovery engagement, requiring you to assess an existing platform, understand its database architecture, document dependencies and identify opportunities for improvement. From there, you'll play a key role in shaping the ongoing database architecture and technical direction.
The opportunity
You'll lead a comprehensive discovery exercise across an established software environment, working closely with engineering and technical stakeholders to understand how the platform operates.
You'll be responsible for uncovering existing database structures, relationships, application dependencies, data flows and business logic, particularly where documentation is limited or outdated.
This isn't simply a database administration position. We're looking for an architect who can lead discovery engagements, apply a structured methodology and translate complex technical environments into clear architectural documentation and actionable recommendations.
Key responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end database and technical discovery engagements across complex enterprise software environments.
- Reverse engineer existing databases and applications to understand schemas, relationships, dependencies and embedded business logic.
- Develop and maintain technical artefacts including ERDs, logical and physical data models, data dictionaries, data flow diagrams and architecture documentation.
- Map application-to-database interactions, integrations, APIs and data dependencies.
- Identify technical debt, architectural risks, performance issues and opportunities for improvement.
- Design and implement data-driven database solutions that support enterprise software applications.
- Work closely with engineering, product and business stakeholders to validate findings and establish a clear understanding of the existing environment.
- Provide architectural recommendations and contribute to the long-term database strategy.
What we're looking for
- Significant experience in Database Architecture, Data Architecture or a closely related senior engineering role.
- Proven experience personally leading major database or data discovery engagements.
- A structured approach to discovery, including the ability to explain the methodology, stakeholder engagement and technical deliverables involved.
- Strong hands-on experience with database design, data modelling, SQL and schema development.
- Experience reverse engineering complex or poorly documented database environments.
- A background designing data-driven solutions for enterprise software applications.
- Strong understanding of relational databases, database relationships, application integrations and data flows.
- Excellent technical documentation and stakeholder communication skills.
Technology environment
The existing setting includes:
- AWS and Amazon Aurora MySQL
- MySQL
- MongoDB and other NoSQL technologies
- APIs and application integrations
- Cloud-based enterprise software platforms
Experience with AWS Aurora and MySQL will be advantageous.
What's on offer?
- Permanent opportunity with an established technology business.
- Melbourne CBD / Docklands location.
- Hybrid working arrangement, approximately two days onsite per week.
- Opportunity to take ownership of a major technical discovery initiative.
- Long-term involvement in database architecture and platform evolution.
Interested? If you've led complex database discovery engagements and enjoy turning undocumented technical environments into well-structured, scalable architectures, we'd be keen to hear from you.

What’s a Rich Text element?
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
Static and dynamic content editing
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
How to customize formatting for each rich text
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
