About MEX Engineering Group

MEX Engineering Group is an engineering and industrial automation business specialising in machinery safety, industrial control systems, mechanical engineering and automation solutions.

We work with industrial clients across manufacturing, materials handling, recycling and processing industries, delivering practical engineering solutions from initial investigation and design through to installation, commissioning and validation.

Our projects involve a broad range of technologies, including PLC control systems, machinery guarding, hydraulic systems, safety-related control systems, industrial machine vision and AI-based inspection solutions.

We are looking for a motivated Assistant Engineer to join our engineering team and work closely with experienced engineers on a variety of industrial engineering projects.

About the role

This is a multidisciplinary engineering position offering exposure to both mechanical and electrical engineering, industrial automation and machinery safety.

You will assist with engineering design, technical investigations, documentation, PLC programming, equipment selection and industrial site activities.

Rather than being restricted to a single engineering discipline, you will have the opportunity to develop practical engineering skills across different technologies and industrial applications.

Key responsibilities include:

- Assisting with machinery safety inspections, hazard identification and risk assessments.
- Supporting machinery guarding design and safety system development.
- Assisting with PLC programming, electrical control system design and troubleshooting.

- Preparing engineering drawings, technical reports, specifications and bills of materials.
- Assisting with mechanical design, hydraulic systems and equipment modifications.
- Researching engineering components, suppliers and technical solutions.
- Supporting industrial camera, machine vision and AI inspection projects.
- Assisting with engineering quotations, project documentation and procurement.
- Participating in industrial site inspections, installation and commissioning activities.
- Working with senior engineers to develop practical and compliant engineering solutions.

Skills and qualifications

Essential:

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline.
- Familiarity with machinery safety standards, particularly AS/NZS 4024 and ISO 13849.
- Exposure to Siemens, Rockwell or Schneider PLC platforms.
- Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, Autodesk Inventor or Fusion 360.
- Sound engineering fundamentals and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics and technical specifications.
- Good computer literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong willingness to learn and develop across different engineering disciplines.

- Ability to work both independently and as part of an engineering team.
- Current Australian driver's licence and Australian working rights.

Desirable:

- CMSE® – Certified Machinery Safety Expert
- CEFS – Certified Expert in Functional Safety
- CECE Certified Expert in CE Marking
- Knowledge of industrial electrical control systems.
- Exposure to hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Basic Python programming or industrial machine vision experience.
- Previous exposure to manufacturing, automation or industrial environments.

What we offer

- Exposure to a diverse range of real-world industrial engineering projects.
- Direct technical mentoring and development under experienced engineers.
- Opportunities to develop skills across mechanical, electrical and automation engineering.
- Practical involvement in engineering design, PLC programming, machinery safety and commissioning.
- Opportunities to take ownership of engineering tasks and progressively develop project engineering responsibilities.
- A hands-on engineering setting where technical initiative and problem-solving are valued.

Who should apply?

We welcome applications from experienced engineers who are enthusiastic about industrial engineering and want to develop into well-rounded engineering professionals.

If you enjoy understanding machinery, solving technical problems and working with different engineering technologies, we would like to hear from you.

Apply now: Please submit your CV and a brief cover letter outlining your engineering background, technical interests and relevant project or practical experience.
