Who We Are
National Indigenous Network Initiative (NINI) is an inclusive, not-for-profit Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based on Kaurna Country in Adelaide, South Australia.
We are committed to advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination, strengthening community connection and supporting culturally grounded approaches to healing and wellbeing.
Through our work, we champion culturally protected, trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches that recognise the importance of culture, identity, family, community and connection to Country in supporting social and emotional wellbeing.
NINI is proud to lead the Aboriginal Social & Emotional Wellbeing Centre, in partnership with Sonder and OARS Community Transitions, jointly funded by the Commonwealth and South Australian Governments.
The Centre brings together cultural knowledge, lived experience and multidisciplinary expertise to provide holistic, community-led support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a growing service that places culture, connection and community at the heart of everything we do.
About the Role
Your lived experience can make a difference.
We are seeking a passionate and community-minded Peer Practitioner to join the Aboriginal Social & Emotional Wellbeing Centre.
As a Peer Practitioner, you will use your own lived experience of healing, recovery, mental health and wellbeing to walk alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Guests, offering understanding, encouragement and connection.
You will support Guests to recognise their strengths, explore their wellbeing goals and navigate challenges in a safe, respectful and culturally responsive environment.
Working within a multidisciplinary and culturally led team, you will contribute to a service that recognises the importance of culture, identity, family, community and connection to Country as essential elements of social and emotional wellbeing.
This role is not about having all the answers. It is about building genuine connections, sharing knowledge appropriately and creating spaces where people feel heard, valued and empowered.
You will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative peer-led activities, group programs and culturally grounded approaches to mental health and wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities

- Draw on lived experience in a purposeful, safe and professional way to support connection, hope and empowerment.
- Build trusting and respectful relationships with Guests, families and community members.
- Support Guests to identify their strengths, explore wellbeing goals and participate in wellbeing planning.
- Facilitate yarning groups, peer-led activities, cultural connection and opportunities for shared learning.
- Support Guests to navigate services and connect with appropriate community, cultural and clinical supports.
- Work collaboratively with cultural practitioners, mental health professionals and other team members to provide coordinated, holistic support.
- Contribute to a welcoming, culturally safe and inclusive environment.
- Maintain appropriate documentation, case notes and records within the Centre's client management system.
- Participate in team meetings, reflective practice, supervision and ongoing professional development.
About You
We are looking for someone who is passionate about supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and understands the value of lived experience in creating meaningful connections.
You will bring:
- Lived experience of your own healing, recovery, mental health or wellbeing journey, and the ability to draw on this experience safely and purposefully.
- An understanding of the importance of culture, identity, family, community and connection in social and emotional wellbeing.
- The ability to build genuine, respectful and trusting relationships.
- A commitment to strengths-based, trauma-informed and recovery-oriented practice.
- An understanding of peer work principles, including mutuality, empowerment, hope and self-determination.
- The ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and work within a supportive team environment.
- Confidence communicating with people from diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
- A willingness to participate in cultural supervision, reflective practice and ongoing learning.
Qualifications and Other Requirements
- Current South Australian Driver's Licence.
- Current Working with Children Check (WWCC), or willingness to obtain.
- Current National Police Check, or willingness to obtain.
- Working with Vulnerable People Check, where applicable.
- Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (or equivalent), or willingness to undertake the qualification.
- Ability to meet vaccination requirements under relevant SA Health policy, where applicable.
