Employment: Permanent Part-time (24 hours a week, 3 days)

Reports to: Financial Controller

About Us

Custom Denning is a proudly Australian-owned manufacturer that designs, builds and supports next-generation public transport, including zero-emission electric buses. As the transport industry moves to cleaner technology, we deliver protected, reliable, high-performance vehicles that meet strict regulatory, safety and contract requirements.

Join a respected, growing organisation where innovation, quality and operational excellence come first.

The Opportunity

We're looking for an experienced Payroll Officer to own our weekly payroll, 3 days a week. Reporting to the Financial Controller, you'll process accurate, on time pays for our growing manufacturing workforce. You'll also look after onboarding and offboarding in payroll, answer employee pays questions, and keep us compliant with super, payroll tax, PAYG and long service leave obligations.

This is a payroll-focused role with no account's payable duties, and it suits someone who wants a stable part-time position with real ownership.

Key Responsibilities

- End-to-end processing of weekly payroll
- Interpreting and applying modern awards, enterprise agreements and employment conditions
- Payroll onboarding, offboarding and maintaining accurate employee payroll records
- Processing terminations, resignations and final pays
- Processing and reconciling superannuation, PAYG withholding, payroll tax and long service leave
- Payroll reconciliations, including general ledger reconciliation
- Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting and end of financial year payroll processing

- Answering payroll enquiries from employees and managers promptly and professionally
- Keeping payroll compliant with current legislation and company policy
- Improving payroll processes, controls and use of our payroll system (Tanda)

About You

You are a detail-oriented and proactive Payroll professional with a strong understanding of payroll legislation, award interpretation, and payroll compliance. You thrive in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and enjoy building positive relationships across all levels of an organisation.

You take pride in delivering accurate outcomes, maintaining confidentiality, and continuously seeking opportunities to improve processes and efficiency.

You're a detail-focused payroll professional who knows payroll legislation and award interpretation well. You're comfortable in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, build good working relationships at every level, and handle confidential information with care.

- At least 3 years' hands-on experience in a payroll officer or similar payroll-focused role
- Experience processing end-to-end weekly payroll
- Strong experience interpreting modern awards and employment conditions
- Experience processing and reconciling superannuation, PAYG and payroll tax

- Experience reconciling payroll general ledger accounts
- Experience managing terminations, resignations and final pays
- Experience with STP and end of financial year payroll
- Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Experience with Tanda or a similar payroll and workforce management system
- Payroll experience in manufacturing, engineering or another award-based workforce
- Knowledge of the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award

Practical requirements

- Available 3 days a week (24 hours) and able to work on site at St Marys
- Our site is not easily reached by public transport, so you'll need reliable transport

Highly Desirable

- Experience processing payroll for 150+ employees
- Previous experience within a manufacturing or industrial environment
- Knowledge of overtime calculations, shift penalties, and apprenticeship wage structures
- Experience working within a blue-collar workforce environment

What we offer

- Permanent part-time role, 3 days a week, with a stable roster
- The chance to own payroll for a growing Australian manufacturer
- A supportive, down-to-earth finance team
- Work with Australia's only local manufacturer of fully electric buses
- Onsite parking at our up-to-date Sydney facility

If you're an experienced Payroll Officer looking to join a growing Australian manufacturer and make a meaningful contribution to a dynamic finance team, we'd love to hear from you.

At Custom Denning we are deeply committed to Reconciliation and encourage Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people to apply.
