Job Responsibilities

Role Purpose:

As SMM (Shanghai Metals Market) continues expanding its global commodity intelligence footprint, we are seeking a motivated and proactive Industry Research Analyst to join our Australia research desk. In this role, you will be responsible for tracking Australia’s energetic metals, mining, and critical minerals sectors, conducting regular market inquiries, supporting price assessments, and maintaining fundamental supply-demand models. You will work closely with our global research teams across APAC and Europe to deliver credible, actionable commodity intelligence to our global client base.

Key Responsibilities

- Primary Market Inquiries & Network Building: Actively engage with Australian industry participants (miners, traders, smelters, procurement leads, and logistics operators) via calls, interviews, and market check-ins to capture first-hand market intelligence, spot transactions, operating rates, and pricing sentiment.

- Price Assessment & Reporting: Support and execute daily, weekly, or bi-weekly price assessments and indices for key Australian mineral and metal commodities (e.g., lithium, iron ore, base metals, or critical minerals) in strict accordance with SMM’s methodology and pricing governance standards.

- Database & Fundamentals Modeling: Maintain and update fundamental supply-demand balance sheets, trade flow trackers, mine project pipelines, and cost database models.





- Research & Content Creation: Author regular weekly commentaries, monthly market outlooks, and thematic supply-chain update notes with clear, data-driven analysis.

- Cross-Regional Collaboration: Partner with SMM’s headquarters analyst teams and overseas desks to reconcile cross-border trade flows, share China/Asia demand insights, and contribute to joint industry research reports.

- Local Industry Engagement: Represent SMM at local industry seminars, site visits, and mining networking events to broaden our local market reach.

Job Requirements

- 2–4 years of work experience within the mining, metals, resources, or broader commodities industry.

- Bachelor’s degree or above in Mining Engineering, Metallurgy, Geology, Supply Chain, International Business, Economics, Finance, or a related discipline.

- Good practical understanding of Australia’s mining ecosystem, with familiarity in one or more areas: lithium/battery materials, iron ore, copper, aluminium/bauxite, nickel, or rare earths.

- Proactive interpersonal and telephone communication skills in English; comfortable initiating outreach and building rapport with industry contacts.

- Strong analytical aptitude, structured problem-solving skills, and working proficiency in Excel.

- Self-motivated and capable of working independently in a remote or hybrid working environment.
