About Syenta
Syenta is pioneering a new era in semiconductor manufacturing with our groundbreaking Localized Electrochemical Manufacturing (LEM) technology. Our manufacturing products build cutting edge advanced packaging for the semiconductor industry by combining patterning and metallization into a single tool. We do that by achieving high-speed, high-resolution metallization at significantly lower costs and energy use, while minimizing emissions and waste.
Founded in Australia, our growing footprint in the US represents a key milestone in our journey. We are building a world-class team where seasoned engineers and ambitious emerging talent collaborate to solve some of the toughest challenges in semiconductor manufacturing.
About the Role
Syenta is building a new way to manufacture advanced packaging interconnects using Localized Electrochemical Manufacturing (LEM), and it depends on getting copper to deposit exactly where we want it. At fine pitch and high aspect ratio, that is hard: voids form, growth turns nonuniform, and a process that works on Monday drifts by Thursday.
This is not a formulation role. Formulation is one of your tools, but the job is to look at a failed deposit, quickly work out why it failed, design the experiments that prove it, and turn the answer into a recipe that runs the same way every time. You will work directly with process and equipment engineers, so your results will shape how our plating systems are specified and how our processes scale.
About You
You are hands-on and you move fast, so when a deposit comes out wrong you get into the lab, find the cause, and fix it quickly. You plan focused experiments, are honest about what the data does and doesn’t show, and aren’t satisfied with a result that worked once. You want to know the process window and why it holds.
You can point to an electrodeposition problem you worked on experimentally and describe the problem, your approach, and the measurable outcome. You diagnose defects from kinetics, mass transport, and current distribution rather than guessing, and you can explain what you found, and what it means for the equipment, to people who aren’t electrochemists. You learn quickly and take real ownership of your part of the problem.
You don’t need to have worked on every technique listed under Required Qualifications. Solid fundamentals and evidence of real problem-solving matter more than a perfect keyword match.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and optimise copper electrodeposition processes for fine-pitch RDL, microvias and high-aspect-ratio structures.
- Investigate electrochemical kinetics, mass transport, current distribution, nucleation and deposition morphology.
- Develop electrolyte formulations, additives and operating conditions to improve uniformity, filling quality and defect performance.
- Identify and eliminate deposition defects, including voids, shorts, overplating, roughness and nonuniform growth.
- Plan and execute rigorous experiments (DOE) to establish robust and reproducible process windows.
- Develop stamp pre-plating, conditioning, recharging and cleaning processes.
- Apply electrochemical characterisation techniques, including cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, impedance spectroscopy and polarisation measurements.
- Correlate electrochemical behaviour with SEM/FIB cross-sections, surface metrology, material properties and electrical performance.
- Collaborate closely with process and equipment engineers to translate laboratory results into scalable manufacturing systems.
- Support the definition of electrochemical requirements for automated plating equipment, electrolyte delivery, multi-zone current control and in-line process monitoring.
- Document experimental results, contribute to SOPs and support continuous improvement in process yield, repeatability and throughput.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Typically 2–4 years of experience in electrochemistry or adjacent technical disciplines. This is indicative rather than a strict requirement.
- Degree in Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
- Solid practical understanding of electrodeposition,
electrochemical kinetics, mass transport and interfacial phenomena.
- Hands-on experience developing and troubleshooting electrochemical deposition processes.
- Experience with electrolyte chemistry, electrochemical instrumentation and analytical characterisation.
- Strong experimental design, data analysis and root-cause investigation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to solve technical problems and deliver measurable results.
- Comfortable working hands-on in the laboratory and collaborating across engineering disciplines.
Highly Desirable
- Experience in semiconductor electroplating, advanced packaging, copper damascene, RDL, TSV or microvia filling.
- Knowledge of bottom-up or superconformal copper electrodeposition, suppressors, accelerators and levellers.
- Experience with industrial plating equipment, high-volume manufacturing or semiconductor process integration.
- Experience scaling electrochemical processes from R&D; into production.
- Familiarity with contamination control, reliability, statistical process control and yield improvement.
What Success Looks Like
- Deliver measurable improvements in copper deposition uniformity, feature quality and process yield.
- Establish repeatable electrochemical recipes supported by experimental evidence.
- Help resolve critical technical challenges in LEM-based RDL and via filling.
- Contribute process learnings to scalable equipment and manufacturing requirements.
- Help Syenta establish world-leading electrochemical manufacturing capabilities for semiconductor advanced packaging.
