We’re looking for an experienced, hands-on IT Manager to lead our IT function. In a business our size, IT is responsible for pretty much anything with a power cord, from the ERP and warehouse scanners to the firewall and the CEO’s laptop. You’ll be the person who owns all of it.
This role is for someone who has run IT in an SME and enjoys it. You’ll be as comfortable presenting a business case to the executive team as you are diagnosing a SQL Server performance problem or a WAN outage at 7am. You’ll lead a small team while staying technical.
Doing both is the job.
So tell me more about the role you say...
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership and strategy: Lead, mentor and develop a team of three. Set priorities, build the IT roadmap and present business cases, risks and recommendations to the executive team. Own the policies and documentation, and coordinate after-hours and on-call support.
Budget and vendors: Manage the IT operating and capital budget, vendor relationships, licensing, telco and external support partners. Hold partners to their service levels and get good commercial outcomes.
ERP and business systems: Own our SAP Business One environment, including the current upgrade to version 10, B1iF integrations, EDI with retail customers, SSRS reporting and BI tools. Work with the business to get the most from our systems.
Warehouse technology: Own our Körber WMS, RF scanners, handhelds and label printing. Work closely with the Warehouse Manager to keep orders moving out the door.
Infrastructure and databases: Manage VMware vSphere, Windows Server, SAN storage, Active Directory and Group Policy. Look after the SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases that support the ERP, WMS and internal applications.
Network: Design and maintain switches, routers, firewalls, wireless and site-to-site VPNs across all sites, including our China office. Experience with Juniper Mist is highly desirable, as this is our network stack.
Microsoft 365: Administer Entra ID, hybrid Exchange, SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive, including identity, MFA and data compliance.
Cyber security and resilience: Own our security posture (EDR, SIEM, Zero Trust and firewall threat prevention),
lead incident response and pen testing remediation, and keep backup and disaster recovery plans tested and ready.
Automation and development: Use PowerShell, SQL and Bash to automate the boring stuff. Oversee our internal app development platform (GitHub and self-hosted apps) and the integrations with our customers and suppliers.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
We’re looking for someone technically strong and confident owning the whole IT environment. You also need to be a genuinely good human. Our #EPIC values (Ethical, Passionate, Inspiring, Creative) aren’t just a poster on the wall. How you treat people matters as much as what you know. No egos, no jerks.
You’ll ideally have:
- At least 8 years’ experience in IT, including at least 3 years in an IT management or senior lead role, ideally in an SME where you’ve been the go-to for everything
- A track record of leading a small IT team while staying hands-on
- Experience managing IT budgets, vendors, contracts and licensing
- ERP experience. SAP Business One (including B1iF) is highly desirable
- Experience with warehouse management systems and technology in a distribution environment (highly desirable)
- Strong SQL Server administration and T-SQL skills
- Strong knowledge of VMware, Windows Server, Active Directory and Microsoft 365
- In-depth network and security knowledge. Juniper Mist experience is highly desirable
- Confidence across both Windows and Apple environments
- PowerShell scripting (essential)
- A structured, evidence-based approach to troubleshooting
- The ability to explain technical matters clearly to executives and non-technical staff, without the jargon
- Relevant qualifications or certifications such as ITIL, Microsoft, VMware VCP or JNCIS (desirable)
If you’ve run IT in a growing business, like being the one who owns it, and want to lead a team in a place where people actually enjoy coming to work, we’d love to hear from you!
