Aegis Law Group | 33 Queen Street, Brisbane QLD 4000 | Full time or Part-Time
If you want your family law work to go all the way to final hearing, read on.
About Us
Aegis Law Group is a Brisbane family and criminal law practice, founded by Principal Solicitor Nicholas Schoenmaker about five years ago. We are a small, busy team. We run matters from first instructions through to judgment, and we brief counsel often. Our criminal practice works alongside the family team, so family violence, protection orders and the overlap between the two jurisdictions are familiar ground here.
The Work
Our family files are in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. Most are in the Brisbane Registry, with others in Townsville, Cairns and Rockhampton. Your caseload will include:
- parenting matters, many involving an Independent Children's Lawyer, family reports and allegations of family violence
- property matters, from disclosure and balance sheets through to defended hearings
- consent orders and negotiated outcomes, including family dispute resolution and Legal Aid conferences
- Legal Aid Queensland grants, including the section 102NA cross-examination scheme, as well as privately funded clients
- interim and contravention applications, and final hearings in Division 1 and Division 2
Much of the work is hearing preparation. That means affidavits, subpoenas and reviewing subpoenaed material,
case outlines, minutes of orders and briefs to counsel. You will work closely with experienced barristers, with support staff to assist, and see your preparation carried through to the courtroom.
Travel
From time to time, you will be required to travel to Townsville, Cairns and other parts of Queensland for trials. On those trips you will be responsible for instructing counsel.
About You
- 2 to 5 years' post-admission experience, with a solid grounding in family law
- A current Queensland practising certificate
- You can run a file, meet court deadlines, and deal confidently with the other side, ICLs and registries
- You draft clearly and carefully
- You are hands-on, and you prepare and draft your own material rather than relying on support staff to do it
- You stay calm and use good judgement with clients going through a hard time
What We Offer
- Full-time or part-time arrangements
- Working directly with the Principal, with real responsibility for your files
- Regular hearing and trial work in Brisbane and regional Queensland
- Support staff who assist with the preparation of material and briefs
How to apply
Send your CV and a short cover letter to Nicholas Schoenmaker at ••••@aegislawgroup.com.au. Applications close on 6 January 2027. The role is available sooner, so we encourage you to apply early.
