Operations Manager | Multi-Venue Hospitality | Sydney
An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced, energetic and highly hands-on Operations Manager to join a growing private hospitality group in Sydney.
This is not an office-based Operations Manager role.
We are looking for someone who has genuine pub and hospitality experience and wants to be in the venues, on the floor, behind the bar when required, observing the customer journey, supporting venue leaders and creating the energy, culture and service standards that make a hospitality venue genuinely great.
The successful candidate will initially oversee two established operating venues, with two significant new venues currently in development and due to join the portfolio.
As the group grows, this role will become an integral part of ensuring each venue operates consistently while still maintaining its own personality and connection with its local community.
The Role
You will work closely with venue leadership teams to drive day-to-day operational excellence across the portfolio.
A large portion of your week will be spent physically within the venues, particularly during key trading periods.
You will be expected to observe, coach, challenge, support and lead from the floor rather than from behind a desk.
You will report directly to the CEO and CFO and will be supported by an established Head Office team across key functions including marketing, operations, data, administration and broader business support.
You will not be expected to do everything alone. The role is designed to work closely with this support network so you have the resources, information and backing required to be successful across the venues.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting and developing General Managers and venue leadership teams
- Regularly working within venues during key trading periods
- Observing the complete customer journey and identifying opportunities for improvement
- Driving exceptional customer service standards
- Building strong, positive and high-performing venue cultures
- Coaching Managers on leadership, communication, accountability and team development
- Improving consistency across service, presentation and venue operations
- Supporting and reviewing bar, gaming, TAB, Keno and broader venue operations
- Ensuring Managers understand and consistently follow opening and closing procedures
- Reviewing cash handling, tills, end-of-night procedures and operational controls
- Identifying operational issues and ensuring they are corrected quickly
- Supporting new venue openings, recruitment, training and team development
- Helping establish operational standards and procedures for new venues
- Monitoring labour efficiency and operational performance
- Working collaboratively across Front of House, Back of House, Gaming and other venue departments
- Supporting Managers through busy services and major trading periods
- Ensuring teams understand expectations and are held accountable to them
- Creating excitement, energy and atmosphere within the venues
- Identifying opportunities to improve customer retention and repeat visitation
- Developing strong succession plans and future leaders within the business
- Working closely with Head Office to ensure venue initiatives are implemented consistently and effectively
- Providing transparent operational feedback and recommendations directly to the CEO and CFO
The Person We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who genuinely understands pubs and hospitality from the ground up.
You should be comfortable walking onto a busy floor, stepping behind a bar, understanding how a gaming room should operate, checking TAB and Keno operations, reviewing POS processes and identifying whether a venue is being run properly from open through to close.
This role requires someone with real operational hospitality experience, not just corporate or administrative management experience.
You will ideally have:
- Significant senior pub, hotel or hospitality management experience
- Experience overseeing multiple departments or venues
- Strong hands-on Front of House and bar experience
- Practical knowledge of gaming operations
- Experience with TAB and Keno
- Strong knowledge of POS systems and venue technology
- Experience with pub opening and closing procedures
- A sound understanding of cash handling, tills, end-of-day processes and operational controls
- Strong knowledge of customer service and venue presentation standards
- Exceptional leadership and people-management skills
- The confidence to coach and challenge experienced Managers
- A practical and solutions-focused approach
- Strong commercial awareness
- Experience developing teams and creating positive workplace cultures
- The ability to identify operational weaknesses quickly and implement solutions
- Experience with new venue openings or major operational projects would be highly regarded
- Flexibility to work across different trading periods, including evenings and weekends when required
- Relevant NSW hospitality and gaming qualifications appropriate to the role
Most importantly, we want someone with presence.
Someone who can walk into a busy venue and immediately understand what is happening.
You should notice whether the bar is flowing properly, whether customers are being acknowledged, whether Gaming is being managed correctly,
whether staff are productive, whether POS systems and procedures are being followed, whether the venue presentation is right and whether the Manager on Duty has control of the shift.
You need to be equally comfortable coaching a General Manager, supporting a busy bar team, observing a gaming room or helping bring structure back to a difficult service.
What This Role Is Not
This is not a Monday-to-Friday office position.
While there will naturally be reporting, planning and administration involved, the majority of your impact will come from being present within the venues.
We want someone who enjoys being amongst the action and understands that the best way to develop hospitality teams is to work alongside them, observe them and coach them in real time.
You will not be managing hospitality from a spreadsheet.
You will be expected to understand how the venue operates from opening the doors through to the final close, including service, bar, gaming, TAB, Keno, POS systems, cash procedures, customer experience and team performance.
The Support Around You
While this is a senior role with significant responsibility, you will have a strong Head Office support network behind you.
You will work directly with the CEO and CFO and collaborate closely with Head Office functions to help remove roadblocks, provide data and insight, support recruitment and training, assist with marketing and promotions, and ensure venue initiatives are properly resourced.
The Operations Manager will be the key link between Head Office and the venues, helping turn strategy into action while also feeding real-time operational insight back into the business.
We want you focused on leading venues and people, not getting buried in administration that can be supported elsewhere.
The Opportunity
This is an exciting time to join the business.
You will initially be working across two established venues while also becoming heavily involved in the preparation and opening of two new venues.
The next stage of growth creates a genuine opportunity for the successful candidate to help shape the operating culture, leadership structure and service standards of the group moving forward.
You will have direct access to senior decision-makers, a Head Office team behind you and the opportunity to make a genuine impact across a growing hospitality portfolio.
We are looking for someone who wants to build something, not simply maintain it.
If you are a passionate hospitality operator with genuine pub experience who loves creating great teams, strong venue culture, exceptional service and memorable customer experiences, we would love to hear from you.
Please apply through SEEK with your resume and a brief introduction outlining your hands-on pub, gaming and multi-venue leadership experience.
All applications will be treated confidentially.
