LOCATION - Launceston Tasmania
Warning: side effects of this job may include fresh air, long weekends and a much shorter commute.
First, some myth busting. Your commute? About as long as a song or two. Parking? Still a thing here, and usually close by. The standard five-day week? We had a look and decided it could do with a rethink.
When you start, you pick what suits you: a compressed four-day week or a nine-day fortnight. Same hours, squeezed into fewer days. Hello, regular three-day weekends.
Now, about Launceston. Locals call it Launnie, and most people who move here wonder why they didn't do it sooner.
Somewhere along the line, a lot of us were sold the idea that a decent career came with a catch. Long commutes. Huge mortgages. Weekends spent recovering from the week. We've never been big fans of that deal.
Here, you don't have to pick. Meaningful work and a life outside it. Room to grow and room to breathe. Literally, in this case.
Picture it. Spend the morning working out how to make a city's air cleaner, eat lunch beside the Tamar, finish at a sensible hour, then choose between a trail ride, a bushwalk, a paddle, a winery, the beach or a quiet night at home.
Almost all of it is on your doorstep. Mountain bike trails people fly in for. Waterfalls. Rainforest. National parks. Coastline. Food and wine good enough to be risky.
Out there, the air is about as good as it gets. Tasmania is home to some of the cleanest air on the planet. Your job is to help the air in town live up to it.
Winter is a big part of that story. Frosty mornings, snow on the mountains, a fire going at home. All lovely, until thousands of chimneys and a still night trap the smoke in the Tamar Valley. That's the problem you're here to solve.
Home life looks a bit different here too. Character houses. Heritage streets. Proper backyards, gardens and trees. The kind of places visitors stop to photograph. You could live in one.
As for us, we're not a sleepy council. We're ambitious, we're progressive and we're getting on with big, city-shaping work. Clean air is part of that. You'll also get Wellness Leave, up to 3 days of end of year shutdown leave, Fitness Passport, Flare Benefits including Novated Leasing options, a free EAP and discounted health insurance, because looking after our people matters.
We're not here to coast, and we don't settle for "that'll do."
Right. The job.
As our Environmental Officer for Clean Air, you'll own the Domestic Wood Smoke Plan and the strategies behind it. You'll follow the data, get out into the community and make a real dent in winter smoke across the city.
You'll be part of a team that loves living here as much as you will, and who'll have you settled in no time.
Fair warning: this isn't for everyone. If you're attached to gridlock, eye-watering mortgages or booking nature months in advance, we may not be a match. We'd rather be out living.
Everyone is welcome to apply. If you need adjustments to apply or take part in the process, just let us know.
Cleaner air. More life. Get your application in before the secret's out.
(PS: the formal bit is below. HR insisted.)
