About the role
Our client, Hollywood Metalfab Pty Limited, is seeking a mechanical design engineer to join its team at Seventeen Mile Rocks. The role covers the full product cycle, from concept and prototyping through to production, and combines design engineering with hands-on CNC laser cutting.

Key responsibilities

- Design and develop mechanical products, welded assemblies and sheet metal components from concept through prototyping, testing and production.
- Prepare and modify 3D CAD models, assembly and fabrication drawings, and engineering specifications.
- Select suitable materials, considering strength, durability, operating conditions, manufacturability and cost.
- Carry out stress analysis and factor of safety calculations, using simulation tools where applicable, to confirm components can withstand expected loads.
- Build prototypes, conduct performance testing and refine designs based on the results.
- Review existing designs and recommend improvements to performance, reliability, safety and manufacturing efficiency.
- Work with fabrication and production teams to resolve design issues and ensure components can be manufactured and assembled to drawing.
- Prepare bills of materials, technical specifications and manufacturing drawings, and keep design documentation up to date.
- Operate CNC laser cutting machines to produce sheet metal parts to approved drawings and dimensional requirements.




- Prepare and optimise sheet metal nesting layouts to maximise material use and reduce scrap.
- Check manufactured components for dimensional accuracy and conformity to specification, and address any discrepancies.
- Support the transition from prototype to production by checking fit, functionality and manufacturability.
- Identify opportunities to improve product design, material usage and manufacturing processes while maintaining quality and performance standards.

About you

- Qualifications and experience in mechanical or manufacturing engineering, with experience in welded assemblies and sheet metal design.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD and preparing fabrication drawings.
- Working knowledge of stress analysis, material selection and design validation.
- Experience with, or willingness to be trained on, CNC laser cutting and nesting software.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work with fabrication and production staff.
- Right to work in Australia.
