About The Company
St Vincent’s Health Australia is committed to delivering excellent and compassionate care to every person, wherever they are.
Through
Strategy 2030, the organisation is connecting care across its public and private hospitals, aged care services and virtual care offerings, with a goal of delivering half of all care virtually or in people’s homes by 2030. This work supports a better and fairer health and aged care system, improves quality of life for patients and residents, and strengthens the communities St Vincent’s serves.
About The Role
As an AI Engineer in the AI Delivery team within Data, Analytics, AI & Interoperability, you will build and deliver artificial intelligence solutions for healthcare. Reporting to the Senior AI Architect & Developer, you will take solutions from early prototype through evaluation, governed production deployment and ongoing support. Your work will help clinicians, carers and staff use practical AI tools in their daily workflows and contribute to better experiences for patients and residents.
You will join the development of a new enterprise data and AI platform and help establish patterns that can be reused across the organisation. The technology environment includes Databricks, Microsoft Azure, generative AI models, Model Context Protocol (MCP) and GitHub. You will partner with clinical, governance, privacy and legal colleagues to ensure solutions are secure, responsible and suitable for real-world use.
Qualifications
You bring at least five years of professional experience in software, data or machine learning engineering, including two or more years building AI solutions. You have taken at least one AI-enabled solution from prototype through production deployment and support.
Advanced
Python skills are essential,
alongside working capability in a language such as TypeScript, JavaScript, C# or Java. You can build clean, tested services and APIs, develop lightweight user-facing applications, and work confidently with SQL and data preparation.
You have experience integrating large language model APIs, including authentication, rate limiting, streaming, structured outputs and error handling. Practical experience with agentic AI, orchestration frameworks or MCP is important, including tool calling, state management, multi-step workflows, human review, failure handling and evaluation. You also understand retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), vector search and embedding models.
Experience with traditional machine learning libraries such as scikit-learn, PyTorch or Hugging Face is valuable, as is experience working directly with users to understand workflows and technical needs.
Responsibilities
Build, test and deploy reliable production AI solutions, translating architectural designs and standards into maintainable code. Design agentic systems with appropriate orchestration, tools, memory, planning and human-in-the-loop safeguards. Integrate models such as Anthropic Claude through Databricks Mosaic AI Gateway and Azure OpenAI into clinical and operational workflows using secure, documented APIs.
Develop on the CDAI platform by using governed Databricks lakehouse data products through Unity Catalog and exposing capabilities through the enterprise API gateway and MCP servers.
Prepare clinical notes, documents and operational data for model development, retrieval and evaluation. Select and build traditional machine learning models where they are more appropriate than generative AI.
Support the full LLMOps and MLOps lifecycle, including versioning prompts, models and datasets; tracking experiments with MLflow; deployment; monitoring quality, cost and latency; and supporting retraining. Develop prototypes through the AI Incubator, contribute reusable components to the AI Accelerators library, document technical patterns, pair with colleagues and implementation partners, and support staff using self-service AI tools.
Perks
This is a permanent, full-time position based in Melbourne, with hybrid working and a minimum of one day each week on site.
Benefits include competitive salary packaging, discounted private health insurance, an Employee Assistance Program for employees and their families, and access to Fitness Passport. Your employment will be conditional on completing required pre-employment checks, including relevant immunisations. Applications will be considered throughout the advertising period. The closing date is 5 November at 11:59 pm.
