About the role
Moreton Hire is seeking an experienced Exhibition Designer to join our design and project delivery team.
The role is focused on creating commercially viable, visually impressive exhibition stands, trade-show environments, brand activations and event spaces. You’ll take client briefs and turn them into compelling concepts that can be accurately priced, manufactured, installed and delivered by our operational teams.
We’re looking for someone who combines strong creative ability with practical construction knowledge. The best design is not simply the best render. It needs to work within the client's budget, suit our available systems and inventory, be efficient to build and install, and deliver a strong result on the show floor.
Key responsibilities
- Develop creative concepts for custom exhibition stands, trade shows, activations and corporate event environments.
- Produce high-quality 3D designs, renders and presentation material for client proposals and pitches.
- Translate client briefs, brand guidelines, floor plans and budgets into buildable exhibition solutions.
- Design using a combination of custom joinery, modular exhibition systems, signage, graphics, furniture, lighting and AV.
- Work closely with Moreton Hire’s sales, project management, production and operations teams.
- Prepare accurate layouts and documentation suitable for costing, production and installation.
- Design with commercial outcomes in mind, including material utilisation, labour, transport, install/dismantle requirements and reusability.
- Revise concepts efficiently following client or internal feedback.
- Assist with larger exhibition and event floor plans, feature areas, organiser requirements and custom infrastructure.
- Help maintain and develop a library of reusable design elements, systems and standard products.
- Ensure designs consider venue requirements, accessibility, structural limitations and relevant Australian standards.
- Support continuous improvement in how Moreton Hire uses technology and AI to improve concept development, visualisation and design productivity.
What we're looking for
Essential
- Experience in exhibition, event, retail, experiential, interior or spatial design.
- Strong 3D modelling and rendering capability.
- Ability to interpret a client brief and develop a concept independently.
- Understanding of how temporary exhibition structures and custom stands are actually manufactured and installed.
- Strong spatial planning and graphic presentation skills.
- Ability to work across multiple projects and tight event-industry deadlines.
- Commercial mindset with an understanding that designs must be achievable within a client budget.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work directly with salespeople, project managers, production teams and clients.
Software Experience with some combination of:
- AutoCAD
- Revit
- SketchUp
- 3ds Max
- Adobe Creative Suite, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign
We are particularly interested in designers who are comfortable adopting AI-assisted design and visualisation tools where they improve speed, creativity or presentation quality.
Highly regarded
- Previous exhibition stand design experience.
- Experience designing custom joinery and fabricated elements.
- Knowledge of modular exhibition systems.
- Understanding of exhibition halls, rigging, signage, AV and lighting.
- Experience taking a project from initial sketch through to construction documentation.
- Experience designing both custom stands and repeatable/modular solutions.
- Ability to design with hire inventory and reuse in mind rather than treating every project as a completely bespoke build.
What success looks like The successful designer will create concepts that:
1. Win work by presenting clients with strong, contemporary ideas.
2. Meet budget and can be accurately costed.
3. Can actually be built efficiently by our production and installation teams.
4. Use Moreton Hire inventory intelligently, supplemented by custom fabrication where appropriate.
5. Reduce redesign and production problems through accurate documentation.
6. Create solutions that can potentially be reconfigured and reused, improving both client value and Moreton Hire's commercial return.
The person You’ll probably suit Moreton Hire if you're creative but practical. You're comfortable producing an impressive client-facing render, but you're equally interested in how the wall connects, how the graphic is installed, whether the component exists in stock, how many people are required to build it and whether the design makes commercial sense.
This is a hands-on design position for someone who wants to see their ideas move from screen to workshop to exhibition floor.
