MAKO is an aerospace technology company focused on improving the efficiency of the global aviation fleet by bringing our shark-skin-inspired drag reduction product, Flightfilm, to commercial and defense aircraft. Flightfilm can deliver up to 4% efficiency gains, reducing carbon emissions by millions of tonnes every year. Founded and headquartered in Sydney, Australia, MAKO works with some of the largest airlines and aircraft manufacturers worldwide to deliver scalable, near-term efficiency gains for aviation that bridge the gap between today's operating fleets and the next generation of aircraft technologies.
You Mission
We’re looking for a Quality Specialist to be our pre-flight check, making sure every Flightfilm product and procedure is cleared for takeoff before it reaches our customers and regulators. You’ll make sure every Flightfilm process, record and procedure stands up to our customers, our regulators and our own high standards. You’ll close the gaps in our QMS, keep our documentation sharp, and get us audit-ready across both our Australian and US entities.
You’ll join a rapid-moving startup where quality isn’t a box at the end of the line. It’s built into how we work, and you’ll be the one building it.
This role is part of the Manufacturing Operations team. You will report to the Production Team Lead. You’ll be an early starter, with typical hours of 7am–3pm, which may shift as our manufacturing grows.
What You Will Do
- Own compliance across our systems, team, procedures and documentation, keeping us aligned with internal standards and regulatory requirements
- Maintain and strengthen our QMS, running internal audits, managing document registers and closing compliance gaps
- Oversee day-to-day manufacturing quality and conformity inspections, where Flightfilm gets checked before it takes off
- Review evidence and documentation so that when an auditor walks in, we’re ready
- Coach the team on our processes and standards, and drive continuous improvement across AU and US operations
What Success Looks Like
- First Month: You’ve taken a deep dive into our QMS, document registers and compliance gaps, so you know where we stand and where we need to go.
You’ve set up routines for internal audits and documentation, and you’re on the floor with Manufacturing Operations supporting conformity inspections
- First Six Months: The big QMS gaps are closed and our evidence is audit-ready. You’re running internal audits, sharpening our continuous improvement processes, and providing dedicated quality coverage across Sydney and the US
- First Year: We’ve come through our upcoming audits with strong QMS alignment and documentation to be proud of. Quality is part of how everyone at MAKO works, and you’re the go-to authority the team turns to, training others and raising the bar
About You
- You’ve done quality assurance, QMS compliance and internal auditing in manufacturing or another regulated industry, and you know what valuable looks like
- You can keep a QMS in good shape and its documentation current
- You’re hands-on with conformity inspections and manufacturing QA, comfortable both on the floor and at the desk
- You get satisfaction from making things better and bringing people along with you, not just pointing out what’s wrong
- Experience with aviation, medical device or other regulatory standards, and in preparing for external audits, will help you hit the ground running
- You’re excited by the idea of building quality from the ground up at a startup, instead of inheriting a binder nobody reads
Why You Should Join MAKO
Problems worth solving
Aviation has a burning fuel problem. The sector burns US$261 billion worth of fuel and emits a billion tonnes of CO2 in the process, yet the necessary decarbonisation technology levers are decades away, and emissions will continue to grow.
MAKO’s mission is to improve the efficiency of the global aviation fleet by delivering emissions reduction without the associated ‘green premium’.
What we offer is comparable to new jet engines, but invisible and 100x cheaper. We will make every plane burn less fuel, fly further, faster, and carry more.
MAKO is vertically integrated, meaning we design and develop our product, manufacture it, define the application methodology, and handle support. That means the work you do here goes directly into a product on a real aircraft.
Technology worth mastering
Our vertically integrated structure allows us to break down silos between teams, exposing each and every MAKO team member to expertise and developments in materials science, optics, fluid dynamics, and scale manufacturing.
Values worth holding The MAKO team collectively enacts our Values of ‘Lift over Drag’, ‘Active Transparency’, and ‘Change the Boundary Conditions’. These are not corporate platitudes – at MAKO, you’ll see firsthand how our Values drive decision-making, unblock communications, and provide clarity in ambiguous situations, helping us to outperform industry incumbents many times our size.
Perks worth realizing
We offer flexible working arrangements so you can balance your work with your life outside the office. Our Sydenham offices boast an attractive location next to public transport and within a short walk to food and dining options. Each month, the team gets together for activities and social events, which helps us stay connected as we grow.
You will also have access to our Employee Benefit Program and our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which gives you and your family free, confidential support when you need it.
Application Process
Apply with your CV and a short cover note. Our process includes a screening call, an interview with the hiring manager, a short take-home case study and overview session, and a final panel interview with our leadership team. We aim to move from application to offer within four to five weeks, and we’ll keep you updated at every stage.
MAKO is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from every background. Careers rarely fly a direct route, so if you're close but not a perfect match, apply and tell us why.
