Lead intranet content strategy, governance and information architecture for a large federal department, with real scope to improve it.
This Commonwealth department delivers policy advice and programs across a broad portfolio, with staff based in Canberra and in offices around Australia.
The Communication Branch delivers department-wide services across internal and strategic communications, speechwriting, media, social media, advertising, intranet content and digital production.
The Opportunity
This 12-month EL1 role leads the intranet content support function within the department’s Internal Communication section.
The intranet runs on SharePoint, and this role owns how content on it is structured, governed and maintained.
You will work with content editors and owners in every business area, and with the department’s digital workplace support team.
You set the standards, then help others meet them.
You’ll have the chance to:
- Own the intranet content strategy and governance model, with scope to improve both rather than simply administer them
- Be the department’s go-to adviser on information architecture, content design and accessibility
- Build publishing capability across a large organisation by designing and delivering training for content editors, users and administrators
- Work within a full-service Communication Branch, alongside specialists in internal communication, speechwriting, media and digital production
- Choose to be based in Canberra or Brisbane
The Role
This is a hands-on leadership role that balances content strategy and governance with practical publishing work.
You’ll be responsible for:
- Leading the department’s intranet content support function, advising content editors and owners on structure, format and layout
- Maintaining the intranet information architecture and advise on changes as business needs shift
- Developing and maintaining intranet policies and standards, and monitor compliance so content meets communication and accessibility requirements
- Developing and improving the intranet content strategy and its associated governance modules
- Running regular content review and feedback cycles with content editors and owners
- Working with stakeholders and the digital workplace support team to deliver content that meets business needs and gives users a consistent experience
- Designing and delivering training and instructional guidance for content editors, users and administrators
- Maintaining and improving the department’s approved Word and PowerPoint templates
- Creating, editing and publishing intranet content as required
The Ideal Person
You have led or worked at a senior level in an intranet publishing function within local, state or federal government.
You will bring the following skills and experience:
- Experience leading the delivery of an intranet content support function
- Experience in an intranet publishing role, ideally on SharePoint
- The ability to structure, write and edit online content in plain English, in line with the Australian Government Style Manual and accessibility requirements
- Strategic thinking: you identify issues early, anticipate risks and use data and insights to shape content strategy
- Robust stakeholder skills, with a track record of influencing and negotiating across business areas and advising senior managers
- The ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines while keeping quality high
- Capability at the EL1 level under the APS Work Level Standards
An Australian citizenship and a Baseline security clearance is essential for this role.
Salary / Rate
- $125k – $144k + 15.4% Super
- 12-month contract fixed term contract
- Based in Canberra or Brisbane
