The School

Harrisdale Senior High School (SHS) is one of the largest and fastest-growing secondary schools in Western Australia, with more than 2,400 students across Years 7 to 12 and over 200 staff. As we celebrate our tenth year, we continue to strengthen our reputation as a school committed to ‘Excellence Everywhere’. Our diverse student population contributes to a dynamic learning environment characterised by high expectations, aspiration and achievement.

Harrisdale SHS is recognised for its strong academic performance, use of high-impact teaching strategies and commitment to the intellectual, creative, social and personal development of every student. This is supported by comprehensive pastoral care, strong community partnerships and a culture that promotes leadership, innovation, civic responsibility and our values of Care, Respect, Responsibility and Excellence.

We offer a comprehensive and high-performing Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) program alongside high-quality General and Vocational Education and Training (VET) pathways. Through this broad range of pathways, students are supported to reach their potential and develop the knowledge, confidence, skills and aspirations needed to contribute positively to society.

Our specialist and enrichment programs cater for a diverse range of student strengths, needs and interests. These include the Gifted and Talented (GAT) program, the Harrisdale Extension Academic Program (HEAP), specialised Music and Sports programs – including Cricket, Netball and Volleyball – and a broad range of co-curricular clubs, sporting teams and enrichment opportunities. Together, these programs support student excellence across academic, cultural, sporting and community contexts at state, national and international levels.

We are proud of the strong and positive culture established during our first decade. Our staff play a central role in shaping an inclusive, aspirational and high-performing learning community in which the school’s values are reflected in everyday practice.

The Role

Harrisdale SHS is seeking an enthusiastic, creative and highly collaborative Drama teacher to join our agile and high-performing Arts team. This is an opportunity for an accomplished educator to inspire students through performance, storytelling and theatre-making while contributing to the continued growth of Drama and Musical Theatre across the school.

Drama is offered from Lower School into Senior School, with students developing skills in improvisation, scripted performance, play-building, production and the interpretation and analysis of dramatic forms and practices. The successful applicant will ideally possess the experience and curriculum knowledge to contribute across Senior School ATAR and General pathways, supporting the future growth and direction of Drama in response to student interest.

The successful applicant will ideally use contemporary, evidence-informed teaching practices to deliver engaging, inclusive and appropriately challenging learning experiences. They should create a supportive environment in which students feel confident to experiment, collaborate, take creative risks and refine their performance and production skills.

Working within a multidisciplinary Arts team, the Drama teacher contributes to curriculum development, performances, showcases and school productions. The role provides opportunities to collaborate with colleagues across Drama, Dance, Music, Media Arts and Visual Arts and to connect classroom learning with authentic performance and production experiences.

The successful applicant will ideally display:

- experience and effectiveness in teaching engaging Drama programs across Years 7 to 12, including the capacity to contribute to Senior School ATAR and General pathways;
- strong curriculum knowledge and an understanding of contemporary, evidence-informed approaches to Drama education;
- expertise in performance, improvisation, play-building, scripted drama, characterisation and a range of dramatic forms and styles;
- the capacity to design innovative and inclusive learning experiences that develop students’ creativity, confidence, critical thinking and performance skills;
- experience or a strong interest in Musical Theatre, including the ability to develop students’ acting, movement and ensemble performance;
- skills in directing, devising and producing performances for a range of audiences and contexts;
- experience with, or a willingness to develop capability in, theatre production processes, including staging, sound, lighting and backstage systems;
- the ability to establish a safe, supportive and well‑managed learning environment that encourages collaboration, creative risk-taking and high expectations;
- highly developed interpersonal, communication and organisational skills and the capacity to work collaboratively within the Arts team and wider school community;
- enthusiasm for contributing to school productions, performances, showcases and other co‑curricular opportunities; and
- visible commitment to student success, Excellence Everywhere, and the values of Care, Respect, Responsibility and Excellence.

The school’s purpose‑built Performing Arts Centre provides an outstanding environment for teaching, rehearsal and production, supported by professional-standard staging, lighting and sound facilities.

Musical Theatre forms an important part of the school’s performing arts culture, providing students with opportunities to develop their skills across acting, singing, movement, stagecraft and technical production.

The successful applicant will have opportunities to bring learning to life through performances, showcases and major productions while helping students explore both onstage and backstage pathways. They contribute to a culture that values creativity, celebrates student achievement and provides authentic opportunities for students to build confidence, discipline, collaboration and a strong sense of belonging.

All teaching staff at Harrisdale SHS are provided with a laptop and benefit from professional support, mentoring and ongoing development opportunities.

This is a rewarding opportunity for a Drama educator who wants to contribute to an ambitious and expanding Performing Arts program in a school where the Arts are highly valued and staff are supported to deliver exceptional learning experiences.
