Ward Civil u0026 Environmental Engineering

Sydney

Ward is looking for an experienced Bid Manager to lead our tendering and submissions function and help secure the next stage of our project pipeline.

Reporting to the General Manager, Pre-Contracts & Business Development, you will manage bids from initial opportunity review through to submission, clarification and handover. You will work closely with estimating, operations, commercial and senior leadership to develop competitive, well-considered tenders that reflect how we will actually deliver the work.

This is a hands-on role for someone who can bring the right people together, keep a tender moving and turn complex technical and commercial information into a clear and compelling submission.

The role

You will be responsible for:

- Leading the end-to-end bid process across civil infrastructure opportunities
- Assessing tender opportunities and supporting go/no-go decisions
- Developing bid strategies, win themes and client-focused value propositions
- Establishing tender programs, responsibilities and review milestones
- Coordinating input from estimating, operations, engineering, commercial, safety, environmental and other key stakeholders
- Reviewing tender documents, scope requirements, specifications, drawings and contract conditions
- Leading the development of non-price submissions, including methodologies, staging plans, program narratives, risk approaches and project execution strategies
- Ensuring submissions are complete, compliant and delivered on time
- Working with estimating and operational teams to align methodology, program, resources and pricing assumptions
- Identifying delivery risks, commercial issues, value-engineering opportunities and practical alternatives

- Coordinating tender interviews, presentations, clarifications and post-tender negotiations
- Supporting the handover of successful tenders to project delivery teams
- Leading tender debriefs and using feedback to improve future submissions
- Maintaining bid templates, project case studies, capability information and tender content
- Managing and developing the Pre-Contracts Lead, Bid Coordinator and Submissions Coordinator

The role will work across a range of civil infrastructure projects, including roads, airports, ports, water infrastructure, subdivisions, bulk earthworks and associated civil works, and will require regular collaboration and engagement across Ward’s regions.

About you

You will bring

- Experience in bid management, tender coordination or pre-contracts within civil construction or infrastructure
- Experience managing complex, multidisciplinary tender submissions
- A practical understanding of civil construction methodologies, estimating, programming and project delivery
- Strong commercial judgement and the ability to identify and escalate key contractual, technical and delivery risks
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to turn technical information into clear and credible tender content
- Solid planning skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines and contributors

- Confidence working with senior leaders, project teams, clients, consultants and delivery partners
- A collaborative style and the ability to hold people accountable without relying on direct reporting lines
- Strong attention to detail without losing sight of the broader bid strategy
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

A qualification in engineering, construction management, project management, business or a related discipline would be well regarded, although equivalent industry experience is equally valued. Experience with a Tier 2 civil contractor, NSW Government procurement or clients such as Transport for NSW, airport and port operators, water authorities or major head contractors would be highly regarded.

Why join Ward?

This is an opportunity to take ownership of Ward’s bid management function and have a genuine influence on the work we pursue and how we position ourselves in the market.

You will work closely with experienced estimating, operational and commercial leaders and lead a small pre-contracts team. The position offers exposure to a broad range of civil infrastructure opportunities and the chance to improve the systems, content and processes that support our continued growth. The role is based at our Lane Cove office.
