Shape how firms think about the future and how policy reaches the real economy.

Firm expectations sit at the heart of some of the most pressing questions in macroeconomics today. How do businesses form views about inflation, costs and demand? How do those views shape pricing, wages, hiring and investment? And how does monetary policy actually travel through the economy when uncertainty is high? The Department of Economics at Macquarie Business School is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to help answer these questions.

This is a dedicated research appointment with no formal teaching requirement. You will join a team of macroeconomists and take primary responsibility for a research stream on firm expectations and macroeconomic uncertainty, with protected research time, generous scope to shape your own agenda, and the resources to pursue publication in leading economics journals. You will also help design and field original survey instruments and information-provision experiments, giving you access to novel micro-level data from the ground up.

About the Role

Reporting into the macroeconomics research team in the Department of Economics, you will:

- Design, conduct and publish high-quality research on firm expectation formation and perceptions of macroeconomic uncertainty.
- Examine the transmission of monetary policy, cost shocks and uncertainty to firms' pricing, wage-setting, hiring and investment decisions.
- Investigate inflation dynamics and firms' cost pass-through behaviour.
- Contribute to the design of survey instruments and information-provision experiments, including question design, fielding and data analysis.
- Prepare papers for submission to leading international economics journals and present findings at seminars, workshops and conferences.
- Coordinate the work of research assistants where required.
- Develop your own research agenda alongside the funded research stream, and build networks across the Department, the Business School and the wider policy and research community.

Macquarie Business School brings together researchers, practitioners and students whose work connects with business, policy and the wider community.

Within the School, the Department of Economics has particular depth in macroeconomics and monetary economics. You'll work with a team of macroeconomists on research into firm expectations and the transmission of monetary policy to the real economy.

About You

You hold a PhD in Economics or a closely related field, or you are nearing completion, and you bring an established record or transparent potential in macroeconomics and monetary economics. You are comfortable working with micro-level data, you write code fluently, and you are motivated by research questions that connect theory, data and policy.

Key Selection Criteria

- A PhD in Economics or a closely related field, or be nearing completion of a PhD in one of these areas,
- An established publication record, or demonstrable research potential, in macroeconomics and/or monetary economics,
- Demonstrated experience working with micro-level survey or administrative data,
- Advanced programming and data analysis capability in one or more of Stata, R, Python or MATLAB,
- Capacity to manage a research program with minimal direction, while also contributing to shared research projects within a team,
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing research for academic publication and presenting to varied audiences, and
- Experience with expectations data
