Sydney Creative
Redfern
Please read the full job description before applying.
Sydney Creative is a busy craft studio in Redfern running sewing, candle making, paint and sip, jewellery making and more. We’re looking for a sewing teacher to join our team and run our beginner sewing classes.
This role is only half about sewing
Yes, you need to know how to sew and be confident on a sewing machine. But plenty of people can sew. What we really need is someone who can teach it, to a room full of complete beginners, and make every one of them feel looked after.
That means you:
- Have the patience to teach absolute beginners, including people who’ve never threaded a machine
- Know how to pace a class, so a friendly chat with one person never leaves the rest of the room waiting
- Keep an ear on the whole room, even while you’re helping one person
- Can spot when someone’s struggling from their body language, even if they don’t ask for help
- Have the confidence to lead a room and project your voice so everyone can hear you
- Can be firm but kind, keeping the class on track while making sure everyone has a valuable time
- Build a genuine rapport with every customer, so they leave wanting to come back
If you’ve taught, coached, or worked in hospitality, retail or customer-facing roles, that experience counts just as much as your sewing skills.
About the role
As a Sewing Instructor, you’ll lead calm, engaging, hands-on workshops. You’ll run group sewing classes of up to 12 participants, as well as one-on-one classes.
This role involves the following shifts:
- Every Saturday morning, 8am to 1pm (non-negotiable)
- Some Sundays, starting at 8am and finishing at 12pm, 3:30pm or 6pm, depending on the classes scheduled
- Some weekday shifts, e.g. Wednesday 11am to 4pm and/or 5:30pm to 10pm
Our Level 1 Sewing For Beginners class is mostly verbally led, so you’ll need to be comfortable talking for long stretches and able to explain things very simply and clearly to people who’ve never sewn before. It’s not an easy class to run,
but if you can explain things well, that’s half the battle.
As well as teaching, you’ll cut fabric for our classes, fold patterns, keep the sewing trolley tidy and update inventory.
Key responsibilities
- Run a variety of sewing workshops with enthusiasm and patience
- Engage and support participants of all skill levels so they have a fantastic experience
- Build rapport with participants, while knowing when to chat and when to keep the class moving so it finishes on time
- Prepare materials, cut fabric and set up the studio for each class
- Assist with stock management
- Help with changeovers when other staff arrive to set up for their class
- Keep the studio organised, clean and tidy
About you
- Passionate about sewing
- Quick on your feet and able to move around the room, stepping in fast if someone is using a machine incorrectly
- Experienced in sewing woven fabrics, making garments from commercial patterns and sewing stretch fabrics, and confident using an overlocker
- Bonus if you have experience in pattern making, dance costumes or swimwear
- Not afraid of public speaking. You’ll introduce yourself and the space to the group and lead the session, so being able to project your voice across the room with confidence is key
- Comfortable leading groups of different sizes
- Excellent communication skills
- Organised, punctual and reliable
- Able to be on your feet for long periods
- Available Saturday mornings, Sundays and some weekday shifts
- Someone who goes above and beyond to make sure our customers have a great time
The details
- Casual
- $32 to $40 per hour + super, depending on teaching experience
- All classes run from our studio at 140 Regent St, Redfern, but we may have mobile activations from time to time.
Your sewing experience
In your application, please tell us about your full sewing background, including any experience with garment making, pattern making, stretch fabrics, swimwear, dance or costume sewing, and anything else you’ve done.
We already have a great team of teachers, so we’re looking for someone whose skills complement theirs and bring something different to the studio. Strong sewing experience on its own may not be the right fit if it overlaps with skills our team already has.
Why join Sydney Creative?
We’re a small team committed to building an inclusive, fun and supportive workplace. We love what we do and find our classes really rewarding. There’s also room to train in our other classes for additional hours. If you love sewing and being around people, we’d love to hear from you!
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $32.00 – $40.00 per hour
Benefits:
- Employee discount
Application Question(s):
- This is a casual role. It requires every Saturday from 8am to 1pm, some Sundays from 8am until as late as 6pm, and some weekday shifts finishing as late as 10pm. Some weeks you may have several shifts and other weeks fewer. Does this suit your current availability?
- Some of our classes run up to 5.5 hours with one break in the middle, and we ask our teachers to stay on their feet and on the studio floor for the whole class. Are you comfortable with this?
- Please tell us about your full sewing experience, including garment making, stretch fabrics, overlocking, pattern making, swimwear, dance or costume sewing, and anything else you’ve done.
- Tell us about a time you helped someone who was struggling to learn something new. It doesn’t have to be about sewing.
- What interests you most about this role, and why do you think you’d be a good fit?
