Are you an experienced sewist who loves teaching, developing creative projects and helping students grow in confidence?

Alana Hersh Sewing Studio is looking for a highly organised and creative Studio Programs Coordinator and Lead Sewing Instructor to take a leading role in our children's and adult sewing programs.

Formal teaching qualifications are not essential. Your sewing ability, creativity, reliability and ability to connect with students matter most.

This is a substantial, hands-on position combining regular teaching with program-development time. You will lead after-school children's classes and selected adult evening classes while designing, testing and organising exciting current workshops and curriculum for children and adults.

About the studio

Alana Hersh Sewing Studio offers sewing classes for children, teenagers and adults, from complete beginners through to experienced sewists.

Our mission is to help students develop practical skills, creativity and the confidence to sew independently. We provide a warm and encouraging environment where students can work at their own pace and feel proud of what they create.

About the role

This position is approximately 30 hours per week across four weekdays.

The anticipated general structure is:

- 10-15 hours: program-development days.

- 15-20 hours: class preparation, student coordination and teaching.

- Hours and responsibilities will likely vary during the school holiday period. Please note that the school holidays are our busiest time, so annual leave must be taken outside school holiday program periods.

The position includes a three month probation period.

- Communicate sensitively with families about progress, learning needs, behaviour and classroom matters (enrolments, bookings and payments are handled by the administrator)

- Create a safe, positive and encouraging learning environment

Program and workshop development

You will:

- Research and develop workshop concepts for children and adults

- Design and sew project samples

- Test whether projects are achievable within the available workshop time

- Write lesson plans, project instructions and materials lists

- Identify appropriate ages and skill levels for each program

- Plan school holiday programs and general studio workshops

- Review past workshops and improve them

- Help prepare workshop descriptions and information for marketing

- Work with instructors so programs are delivered consistently

- Organise all patterns and fabrics needed for workshops

- Be in charge of all processes in organising the (school holiday) workshops

- Run general social media and basic marketing for the workshops

Studio coordination

You will also:

- Give guidance and program handovers to other instructors

- Help coordinate casual instructors and classroom assistants

- Ability to work well with other instructors and alongside a team

- Prepare teaching materials and keep work areas organised

- Identify equipment and material needs

- Work with the studio owner on upcoming program launches

About you

You will ideally have:

- Strong sewing and garment-construction skills

- Confidence using and troubleshooting domestic sewing machines

- Experience teaching or working with children

- The ability to lead children's and adult classes on your own

- Creativity and enthusiasm for developing new sewing projects

- Strong written communication and organisational skills

- A patient, encouraging and adaptable teaching style

- The ability to manage several programs and deadlines

- Reliable availability for the required afternoon and evening hours

Experience developing workshops, lesson plans or creative programs would be highly regarded.

Applicants must hold, or be willing and eligible to obtain, a Working with Children Check before starting child-related work.

If you are excited by the opportunity to teach, create and help shape the future of a growing sewing studio, we would love to hear from you.
