Chaos1 is an Australian defence company with a mission to forge a faster path to warfighter capability. Purpose-driven and mission-first, Chaos1 deploys the people, processes and technologies needed to tackle defence's toughest problems. In a world where time is short and the threats are real, Chaos1 is the catalyst that operates forward to rapidly field warfighter capability in months.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The Red Team at Chaos1 plays the adversary. It thinks, plans and fights the way a threat would against the counter-uncrewed, autonomous and force-protection capabilities under test: uncrewed aircraft flown as first-person-view and one-way attack profiles, the reconnaissance and timing that precede them, the ground and electromagnetic signatures that go with them. It operates on Defence ranges and at allied activities in Australia and overseas, under Chaos1's Remotely Piloted Aircraft Operator's Certificate (ReOC) and Chief Remote Pilot alongside the Flight Operations team, and under Defence aviation safety regulation and the host unit's rules on Defence ranges, and the host nation's rules overseas. The Red Team's job is to be hard to detect, track and defeat, and to do it safely.
ABOUT THE JOB
Chaos1 is seeking mission-first Red Team Specialists to join the Red Team within our Mission Operations business line. You will play the threat against counter-uncrewed, autonomous and force-protection systems under test: fly threat aircraft as the opposing force, run the reconnaissance, timing and ground moves an adversary would, and keep the threat fleet flying. You can expect to fly first-person-view and fixed-wing threat aircraft, work the ground as well as the air, and operate inside a crew with pilots, engineers and analysts.
This is an opportunity to be the adversary that Australian counter-uncrewed and force-protection capability is measured against.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Fly threat aircraft as the opposing force on test, evaluation and experimentation serials, including first-person-view, fixed-wing and one-way attack profiles as authorised
Plan adversary runs against the serial's measures. You will build the approach, the timing, the ground moves and the tactics from current adversary practice, and brief and debrief each run with the test team
Emulate the threat faithfully. You will fly and move with the signatures, speeds, altitudes and behaviours the system under test is meant to detect and defeat, and record what it saw and what it missed
Play the ground threat as well as the air threat. You will run the reconnaissance,
observation and approaches an adversary would use against a site, within the rules of the activity and the host unit's direction
Keep the threat fleet flying. You will build, configure, repair and maintain threat aircraft and their datalinks, and keep the maintenance and configuration records the ReOC requires
Operate under the flight authorisation, the risk assessment and the direction of the Chief Remote Pilot and the Red Team Lead, including on live-fire and electronic warfare events
Research adversary systems and tactics from open sources and theatre lessons, and turn them into new profiles, ground moves and threat aircraft for the fleet
Deliver the red side of the data to the test and evaluation team, including the adversary plan, flight logs, telemetry and video for each run
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Over 2 years in an operational, reconnaissance, opposing force or uncrewed systems role, in uniform or in industry
CASA Remote Pilot Licence (RePL), or an ADF uncrewed aircraft qualification, or the ability to obtain a RePL before you fly under Chaos1's ReOC, with training available on joining
Demonstrated adversary acumen. You have played the opposing force, run reconnaissance or surveillance, or tested a site's or system's defences, and can explain how you found the seams
Hands-on with uncrewed aircraft in the field, including assembly, repair and pre-flight and post-flight inspection, and working knowledge of ground control stations, mission planning software and datalinks, or of military mission planning
An understanding of how adversaries employ uncrewed aircraft and ground reconnaissance, and the discipline to play the threat as briefed
Clear communication on the radio, in the brief and in the log
Able to work outdoors in field conditions for extended periods, and to lift and carry aircraft and equipment
Willingness to deploy to Defence sites and ranges in Australia and overseas for extended periods, including irregular hours in campaign windows
Australian citizenship and ability to obtain a NV1 security clearance
Ability to be onsite at Chaos1's XFACTORY, Sydney. This is an onsite and field role.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Time in a small team that planned and executed reconnaissance, surveillance, fires or opposing force tasks in austere or denied environments
Demonstrated first-person-view flying, including manual mode at speed and low level, with a logbook or flight records to show it
Competitive drone racing or freestyle background, or military first-person-view or loitering munition experience
Aeroplane (fixed-wing) or powered-lift (VTOL) category ratings, and the medium RPA weight class (25 to 150 kg)
Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC)
Experience with electronic warfare, signals or electromagnetic signature management on operations
Experience operating in contested or GNSS-degraded environments, including video links under interference
Experience with swarming, autonomous or scripted flight profilesExperience on counter-UAS or force-protection trials, including live-fire or electronic warfare events, on the red or the blue side
Experience building threat aircraft from open designs and commercial components, including 3D printing and composites
A current NV1 security clearance or above
