Chaos1 Pty
Australia
Chaos1 is an Australian defence company with a mission to forge a faster path to warfighter capability. Purpose-driven and mission-first, Chaos1 deploys the people, processes and technologies needed to tackle defence's toughest problems. In a world where time is short and the threats are real, Chaos1 is the catalyst that operates forward to rapidly field warfighter capability in months.
ABOUT THE TEAM
Chaos1's Test and Evaluation team generates decision-grade data under compressed timeframes, and its Mission Systems and Flight Operations teams build and fly the systems behind it. The reports that carry that evidence, the standard operating procedures the teams run from, and the documentation that ships with Chaos1's products all have to be written to a standard and on time. The writer sits with the analysts, engineers and pilots, and the deadlines are the customer's.
ABOUT THE JOB
Chaos1 is seeking a mission-first Technical Writer to own report production, the standard operating procedure library and product documentation across the Mission Operations business line. You will edit, produce and release the assessment reports analysts draft so the customer can act on them, keep the procedure library current and controlled, and write the manuals, guides and data packages that ship with Chaos1's systems. You can expect to work to the data item standards of Defence contracts, and to the pace of campaigns.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Edit, format and release assessment and post-activity reports drafted by analysts, to Chaos1's data standards and the customer's data item requirements
- Run the standard operating procedure library including templates, version control and review cycles, and prepare each procedure for release
- Write product documentation including operator manuals and quick reference guides, and produce maintenance procedures and technical data packages from the engineering and flight operations teams' source material
- Run day-to-day document control for Mission Operations documents inside the company's quality management system, including numbering, protective markings, review and approval records
- Capture procedures and technical material at source, with the analysts, engineers and pilots on the range and at XFACTORY
- Build and maintain the templates, style rules and controlled vocabulary every Chaos1 document is written to
- Manage report throughput against campaign deadlines, and flag what is at risk early
- Support proposal and bid documents when the campaign calendar allows
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, Communications or a related discipline. Equivalent experience may substitute.
- Over 3 years of technical writing in engineering, Defence, aviation or another regulated environment
- Demonstrated production of technical reports, procedures or manuals to a documented standard, with examples you can show or describe
- Ability to work with technical subject matter experts and turn their input into clear, accurate text at pace
- Experience with document control, version control and review workflows
- Working proficiency in Microsoft Word and Share Point, including templates, styles and structured documents
- Willingness to travel to Defence sites and ranges to capture material at source
- Australian citizenship and ability to obtain a NV1 security clearance
- Ability to be onsite at Chaos1's XFACTORY, Sydney. The role is open to hybrid work.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience writing to Defence data item descriptions and ASDEFCON deliverable standards
- Experience with test reports, trial reports or operational assessment products
- Experience with technical publication standards such as S1000D, or structured authoring tools
- Experience applying Australian Government protective markings under the PSPF and handling Defence material
- Experience with graphics, diagrams and photography for technical documents
- Experience in a quality management system environment, including ISO 9001 document control
- Military or Defence background in operations, engineering or publications
- Experience writing proposals and tender responses
- A current NV1 security clearance or above
