Department of Transport NSW – Thirlmere NSW
Transport Heritage NSW Ltd (THNSW) is a not-for-profit, registered charity, dedicated to preserving, sharing and celebrating NSW's transport heritage. We operate the NSW Rail Museum at Thirlmere, the Valley Heights Rail Museum, heritage rail experiences across NSW, and manage a diverse portfolio of significant heritage rail assets and sites.
About the role
We are seeking an experienced, motivated and hands-on Rail Track & Corridor Maintenance Manager to lead the safe inspection, maintenance and ongoing reliability of THNSW’s operational rail track and corridor infrastructure.
Based primarily at Thirlmere, this ongoing full-time leadership role is responsible for infrastructure across the heritage railway from Picton to Braemar and the Valley Heights locomotive depot siding. Reporting to the Head of Rail Operations & Infrastructure you will lead a dedicated team of employees, volunteers and specialist contractors, balancing forward planning and compliance with practical, on-the-ground maintenance.
As the Responsible Officer for certification of the rail infrastructure for which THNSW is the accredited Rail Infrastructure Manager, you will help assure its fitness for use. Your work will span all of track, points, level crossings, signals, bridges and structures, drainage, vegetation, cuttings and other corridor assets.
You will coordinate inspections and defect rectification, develop and implement the Rail Corridor Asset Management Plan, maintain auditable records, manage budgets and contractors, and build the capabilities of your team. This is a varied role where sound judgement, safety leadership and a willingness to get hands-on are equally important.
The role involves travel within NSW, predominantly weekday work with occasional weekends, early starts, late finishes and on-call response.
A Tuesday - Saturday arrangement may be negotiated.
About you
You are an experienced rail infrastructure maintenance professional who can lead from the front, build positive working relationships and deliver safe, reliable outcomes in a busy operational environment.
- Proven experience and relevant qualifications and competencies in rail track and corridor inspection, maintenance and repair to applicable standards.
- Ability to lead, coach and coordinate employees, volunteers and contractors, with a strong understanding of WHS and rail safety responsibilities.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, manuals and maintenance standards, identify defects and prioritise corrective works.
- Strong planning, budgeting, reporting, procurement and stakeholder engagement skills, with sound Microsoft Office capability.
- A practical, collaborative and improvement-focused approach, with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- A current driver licence, relevant plant operation experience and ability to meet Category 1 rail safety medical requirements and required checks.
Highly regarded: Certificate III in Rail Infrastructure – Trackwork (or equivalent), White Card, PO2 and RRV qualifications, excavator operation, RIW card and experience with asset management systems or heritage environments.
At THNSW, you will join a passionate and inclusive team committed to preserving and celebrating NSW’s transport heritage for future generations.
We offer:
- A unique opportunity to lead maintenance of an operational heritage railway and its infrastructure.
- A wide-ranging role combining leadership, planning and practical rail corridor work.
- A supportive, collaborative environment working alongside dedicated staff and volunteers.
- Professional development and an opportunity to make a lasting contribution to NSW transport heritage.
Applications close: Sunday 15th November at 5:00pm (Sydney time).
