Allambie Vet
New South Wales
Full time or Part-Time | Allambie Vet | Sydney's Northern Beaches
Full-time over 4 days | No Sundays | No public holidays | No overnight or on-call shifts
You know veterinary nursing. But you also know there's always more to learn.
You've spent time in practice. You've cared for patients, worked through busy days and developed plenty of clinical skills along the way.
Maybe now you're looking for somewhere you can use those skills, learn new ones, take on more responsibility and work alongside people who genuinely want to do a really good job.
That's what we're looking for too.
After more than 40 years of caring for pets on the Northern Beaches, we've learnt that the nurses who make the biggest difference to a hospital aren't defined by a checklist of clinical skills.
They're the people who notice when a teammate is under the pump and ask, “What can I do?”
Who can be busy without making everyone around them feel stressed.
Who know their patients and notice when something isn't quite right.
Who think about the worried person at the other end of the lead or carrier too.
Who take responsibility, follow things through and care about the little details.
Who ask questions, share what they know and genuinely want the people around them to do well.
We can teach skills. Finding the right person matters much more to us.
Our nurses actually nurse.
Our nurses aren't here simply to hold animals for the vet or spend their day filling gaps. They're an important part of our clinical team and every patient's journey.
Our nursing roster rotates through dedicated Surgery, Procedures, Medical Treatment and Consulting roles, giving you structure, variety and genuine responsibility for your area of the hospital.
Depending on the day, you could be involved in:
- Anaesthesia, surgery and patient recovery
- Caring for medical and hospitalised patients
- Emergency and critical patient nursing
- IV catheters, blood collection and fluid therapy
- Dental procedures and dental radiography
- Digital radiography and diagnostic imaging
- In-house pathology
- Nurse consultations
- Patient admissions and discharges
- Working alongside our vets on treatment plans and patient care
- And plenty of interesting medical and surgical cases that don't always read the textbook.
You'll have experienced vets and nurses around you to learn from, and you don't need to know everything when you arrive.
In fact, we'd be a little worried if you thought you did.
We like nurses who ask questions, want to understand why, share what they know and are equally comfortable saying, “I've never done that before — can you show me?”
If there's an area of nursing you'd like to get better at, we want to help you get there.
We're busy. Properly busy.
Allambie Vet is a busy, independently owned and family-run small animal hospital that's been part of Sydney's Northern Beaches community for more than 40 years.
We have an experienced team of vets, nurses, animal attendants and client care staff and a genuinely varied caseload.
Some days run beautifully.
Other days an emergency walks through the door, surgery changes, three patients need something at once and the plan you had at 8am is ancient history by lunchtime.
That's veterinary medicine.
What matters to us is what happens next.
We work it out together.
People communicate. Priorities change. Someone starts setting up while someone else jumps in to help. We work out what needs to happen and get on with looking after our patients.
You'll work hard here. But you won't work alone.
The person at the other end of the lead matters too.
Excellent veterinary care isn't only about what happens to a patient in treatment.
Our nurses spend a lot of time one-on-one with clients, and those relationships matter to us.
We want someone who notices when an owner is worried. Who takes an extra minute to explain something properly, makes the phone call they promised and thinks about the little things that can make a stressful day slightly easier.
We want our clients to leave feeling that their pet was genuinely cared for and that they were cared for too.
Who will love working here?
Probably someone who:
- Has veterinary nursing experience and wants to keep developing
- Loves being hands-on with patients
- Enjoys a busy hospital and an interesting caseload
- Takes initiative, notices what needs doing and follows things through
- Can adapt when the day suddenly changes
- Communicates openly, kindly and respectfully
- Is comfortable asking for help and equally quick to offer it
- Wants to learn new skills and understand the why behind what they're doing
- Cares about clients as well as their animals
- Takes pride in doing a really good job
- Can have a laugh with us along the way
We're ideally looking for a qualified Veterinary Nurse with at least two years of clinical experience , although the person matters more to us than ticking every box.
Kindness, initiative, curiosity and genuinely caring about the people and patients around you are much harder to teach.
Four days at work. Three days for everything else.
Our full time nurses work their full-time hours across four days per week .
We're also happy to hear from experienced nurses looking for a permanent part-time position.
No Sundays. No public holidays. No overnight shifts. No on-call shifts.
Saturday shifts are shared across the nursing team and our rosters are planned in advance.
We are still a hospital, though. Occasionally a sick patient or emergency doesn't look at the clock before arriving, and there will be days when patient care means finishing later than planned.
We'd rather be upfront about that than pretend veterinary medicine always finishes precisely on time.
A hospital that gives you the tools to do your job well.
We've invested heavily in our hospital, with digital and dental radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, advanced anaesthetic monitoring, ventilators, extensive in-house pathology, dedicated surgical and dental facilities and a dedicated cat hospital.
But equipment isn't what makes a great workplace.
You will work alongside experienced vets who value their nurses, a nursing team with different strengths and interests, and a leadership team that's actually in the hospital and understands what a busy veterinary day looks like.
We support CPD, ongoing education and continued clinical development.
We don't want you doing exactly the same things five years from now that you're doing today.
What you'll get from us
- Above-award remuneration based on your experience and skills
- Full-time hours across four days, or permanent part-time by agreement
- No Sundays or public holidays
- No overnight or on-call shifts
- Shared Saturday roster
- CPD and ongoing in-house education
- Generous veterinary discounts for your own pets
- A structured nursing roster with genuine clinical responsibility
- A wide-ranging and interesting caseload
- Experienced vets and nurses around you
- Opportunities to develop the areas of nursing that interest you
- A team that works hard, helps each other and still manages to have fun along the way
- And hopefully, a workplace where you can do really good veterinary nursing with people you genuinely enjoy working with.
Maybe you're not actively looking.
That's okay.
But if you've read this far and caught yourself thinking,
“Actually… that sounds like somewhere I'd like to work.”
One important thing before you apply
This is a permanent position . Applicants must already have unrestricted working rights in Australia that allow them to work the required hours on an ongoing basis.
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
