Education is a cornerstone of our department. HMOs have access to dedicated weekly Emergency Medicine teaching, practical skills workshops, simulation-based learning and structured point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) education, including regular bedside teaching and hands‑on scanning opportunities.

HMOs are supported to develop core emergency medicine procedural skills, including airway management, wound management, fracture care and ultrasound-guided procedures under direct senior supervision.

For doctors considering a career in Emergency Medicine, Austin offers a strong pathway into ACEM training. HMOs receive career mentoring from FACEMs and senior trainees and are encouraged to participate in the department's education, simulation and ultrasound programs. Many of our ACEM trainees have progressed directly from HMO positions within the department,

making Austin an excellent place to begin and develop a long-term career in Emergency Medicine.

FACEM supervision is available on‑site from 0800-2300 daily, with consultant support available overnight. Our senior clinicians are committed to providing approachable supervision, timely feedback and career development support.

We are proud of our supportive and inclusive culture. Staff wellbeing is actively promoted through TeamED, our departmental wellness committee, the ED Social Club and WEEPS (Wellbeing, Education and Peer Support), which provides confidential peer support for staff when needed.
