ABOUT US

Horizon Labs is an AI and digital engineering consultancy. We help Australian businesses modernise legacy systems, build scalable cloud platforms and bring AI into production.

Our work spans application modernisation, cloud infrastructure, data engineering and AI-enabled software, with a focus on delivering practical solutions that create measurable business value.

THE ROLE

We’re looking for a versatile, hands-on AI-First Software Engineer with strong .NET, Angular and Azure experience to join our engineering team on an initial 6-month contract, with potential for extension.

You’ll work across a portfolio of existing applications, supporting day-to-day development and enhancements while progressively modernising legacy systems, APIs, infrastructure and architecture.

This is a broad, hands-on engineering role. You’ll move between backend development, frontend applications, Azure infrastructure, integrations and modernisation initiatives.

We’re an AI-first engineering business. You’ll use AI coding assistants as part of your everyday workflow to accelerate development, improve code quality and help modernise applications efficiently.

We’re looking for someone who is equally comfortable working with existing systems and building modern solutions.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

- Application development & support: Maintain, enhance and troubleshoot a portfolio of production applications across .NET, Angular and Azure.
- Application modernisation: Progressively upgrade legacy .NET applications, modernise APIs, improve architecture and reduce technical debt.
- Azure engineering: Build, deploy, configure and troubleshoot Azure-hosted applications and services, including App Services, Azure SQL, API Management, Key Vault and managed identities.
- Full-stack development: Develop backend services using C# / .NET and frontend applications using Angular and TypeScript.
- API development & integrations:

Build and maintain secure REST APIs and integrations with internal systems and third-party platforms.
- Database development: Work with SQL Server and Azure SQL, including schema design, query optimisation, Entity Framework Core and data migrations.
- AI-first development: Use Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot or equivalent throughout development, testing, debugging and modernisation.
- DevOps & automation: Work with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, deployment processes and infrastructure configuration.
- Security & performance: Improve application security, monitoring, reliability and performance across the portfolio.
- Collaborative delivery: Work with engineers, product teams and client stakeholders to deliver practical solutions.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

Essential

- 8+ years of commercial software engineering experience.
- Strong C# and .NET experience, including ASP.NET Core and modern .NET.
- Strong, hands-on Microsoft Azure experience, including deploying, configuring, managing and troubleshooting production applications.

- Experience with Azure App Services, Azure SQL, Key Vault, managed identities and API Management.
- Experience maintaining and modernising existing applications, including legacy .NET systems.
- Robust REST API development and integration experience.
- Solid SQL Server skills, including Entity Framework Core, database design and performance optimisation.
- Experience with Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions, CI/CD pipelines and Git.
- Practical experience using AI coding assistants such as Claude Code,

Cursor or GitHub Copilot.
- Strong debugging, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently across multiple applications and priorities.

Nice to Have

- Experience migrating .NET Framework applications to modern .NET.
- Azure infrastructure, networking, security and monitoring experience.
- Infrastructure as Code using Bicep or Terraform.
- Experience with Azure Functions, Service Bus or other Azure integration services.
- Experience building AI-enabled applications using LLMs, agents, RAG or tool calling.
- Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Foundry or Semantic Kernel experience.
- Experience with complex application portfolios or multi-system environments.
- Experience integrating with commercial SaaS platforms.

ABOUT YOU

You’re a well-rounded engineer who enjoys getting hands-on and solving problems.

You’re comfortable working across backend code, frontend applications, databases and Azure infrastructure. You don’t need to be a specialist in everything, but you have strong engineering fundamentals and can quickly get across unfamiliar systems.

You embrace AI-first development and use modern coding assistants to improve productivity without compromising engineering quality.

You’re pragmatic, adaptable and comfortable balancing ongoing application support with longer-term modernisation.

You take ownership of your work, communicate clearly and enjoy delivering software that makes a difference.
