As a Software Engineer (Backend and Infrastructure) at Maileroo, you will design, develop, and maintain the software and infrastructure behind our email delivery and marketing platforms. You will build backend services and APIs, improve production systems, and resolve technical issues to keep our platforms rapid, secure, and reliable. The ideal candidate is comfortable taking tasks from planning through to deployment, writes clean and well-documented code, and enjoys solving problems across software development and infrastructure.

The role combines building and maintaining backend services with hands-on work across Linux systems, databases, deployments and monitoring. You'll investigate problems, contribute to technical decisions and follow improvements through from development to production.

What you will do

- Design, develop, test and maintain backend services and APIs for email processing, customer integrations and platform features.
- Build and improve background processing, message queues, retry handling and event delivery.
- Develop database schemas, improve query performance and troubleshoot data-related issues.
- Maintain and improve Linux production environments, including configuration, patching, backups and security.
- Automate deployment and operational tasks using containers, configuration management and related tools.
- Monitor service health, investigate production incidents and implement changes that address underlying causes.
- Improve software supporting email authentication, bounce and complaint processing, and delivery reporting.
- Document technical decisions,

system behaviour and operational procedures.

What you will bring

- Experience developing and maintaining backend services or APIs in a production environment, in Go or Rust, with a willingness to work mainly in Go.
- Hands-on experience with Linux production environments and deployment or infrastructure automation.
- Experience troubleshooting live services using logs, metrics and monitoring tools.
- Working knowledge of relational databases, including schema design and query optimisation.
- An understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS and TLS.
- The ability to explain technical issues clearly, document your work and collaborate on practical solutions.

A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering or a closely related discipline is welcome, but equivalent professional experience counts just as much.

Useful additional experience

The following would be helpful, but you do not need all of them:

- Email systems, SMTP, SPF, DKIM, DMARC or email deliverability.
- Developing production services in Go.
- Building or operating highly available, redundant services across multiple data centres or availability zones, including replication, failover and recovery.
- Distributed systems, message queues,

background workers or event-driven applications.
- Document databases, caching or key-value stores.
- Docker, Ansible or comparable deployment and configuration tools.
- Bare-metal hosting or working with infrastructure and network providers.

Experience with messaging platforms, API services, payments, hosting or other production SaaS systems can transfer well to this role.

This is a full-time, permanent position. It is a remote position based in Melbourne, with in-person team meetings in Melbourne approximately three to four times a month.

Ordinary working hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Melbourne time.
