Position Title:
Junior High Head Girls Basketball Coach
Reports To:
Athletic Director
Position Purpose
To organize, administer, and lead a development-focused Junior High Girls Basketball program within the Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD).
The Junior High Head Coach teaches core fundamentals, models sportsmanship, and aligns team systems with the Varsity program to serve as an effective feeder for the district.
1. Administrative Compliance & PIAA/PDE Standards
Establish and meet all deadlines for administrative paperwork (rosters, eligibility lists, physicals, equipment orders, transportation, insurance claims, and assistant evaluations).
Comply with all regulations set by EASD, L-L League, District III, PIAA, and NFHS.
Attend mandatory yearly L-L League meetings and PIAA Rules Interpretation meetings.
Complete and maintain mandatory Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) background clearances (Act 34, Act 151, Act 114 FBI Fingerprinting, Act 126 Mandated Reporter).
Complete mandatory annual sports safety training (Concussion Management and Sudden Cardiac Arrest) and PIAA Coaching Education courses (Principles of Coaching and First Aid/CPR) within mandated timelines.
2. Athlete Safety & Character Development
Maintain active, direct supervision of student-athletes at all times (practices, games, locker rooms, facilities, and bus transportation).
Act as a positive role model and ensure all assistant coaches uphold ethical standards.
Administer fair and firm discipline per EASD policies and extracurricular participation contracts.
Model and teach respect toward teammates, opponents, officials, and spectators.
3. Instruction & Practice Management
Prepare and execute daily written practice plans emphasizing skill development, tactical fundamentals, conditioning, and safety.
Provide structured instruction aligned with season-long, monthly, and weekly goals.
Manage game strategy, roster rotations,



and team conduct during contests.
Collaborate with the Head Varsity Coach and Athletic Director to align offensive/defensive philosophies, terminology, and drills.
Meet with the overall basketball coaching staff at least twice yearly (pre- and post-season).
Support youth feeder programs, foster positive relationships with community athletic organizations, and recruit EASD students to promote sports participation.
Organize year-round development opportunities (open gyms, skill clinics, camps, and summer leagues).
5. Staff Management & Communication
Delegate responsibilities to assistant coaches and conduct written end-of-season evaluations based on pre-set goals.
Assist the Athletic Director in reviewing applications and interviewing assistant coach candidates.
Conduct mandatory pre-season parent meetings to outline team standards, eligibility, and expectations.
Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents, teachers, school counselors, administrators, and district media relations.
Qualifications & Position Requirements
Required
Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, modern strategies, and age-appropriate drills.
Effective communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to pass all mandatory PDE background checks.
Valid CPR/First Aid/AED certifications (or requirement to obtain prior to season start).
Fulfillment of PIAA Coaching Certification Requirements (or commitment to complete within two years of hire).
Preferred
Successful prior coaching experience at the middle school, junior high, or high school level.
NFHS / ASEP National Coaching Certification.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
Physical Ability:
Demonstrating athletic skills, standing/walking for extended periods, running, bending, reaching, and lifting/carrying equipment up to 50 lbs.
Visual & Auditory:
Visual acuity to monitor court play; transparent speech and hearing to instruct and communicate in noisy gymnasiums.
Work Schedule:
Availability during afternoons, evenings, and weekends as dictated by the PIAA practice and contest schedule.
