Foye Legal
Wollongong
Foye Legal is seeking an experienced and commercially astute Senior Commercial & Estates Lawyer to lead and grow our commercial and estates practice.
This is an opportunity for a senior lawyer who is ready to take the next step in their career — someone who combines strong technical expertise with sound commercial judgment, established client relationship skills and the ambition to lead a team and build a thriving practice.
The successful candidate will take a leadership role across commercial and business law, commercial leasing, estate planning, estate administration and disputed estates litigation.
Working alongside senior lawyer David Swan, you will have the benefit of established experience, client relationships and a strong foundation from which to develop the practice.
Foye Legal acquired Swan & Co Legal eight years ago, and this role offers an exciting opportunity to build on that legacy while shaping the future direction and growth of the practice.
For the right person, this role offers a genuine opportunity to progress to Director, with the scope to develop a leadership position, expand the firm's client base and make a meaningful contribution to the firm's strategic direction.
About Foye Legal
Foye Legal is a highly regarded, award-winning law firm with offices in Wollongong, Shellharbour and North Sydney. We pride ourselves on building long-term client relationships, delivering outstanding legal services and creating an environment where our people are supported to achieve their potential.
Our approach is grounded in authenticity, mastery, professionalism and respectfulness. We value people who take pride in their work, act with integrity, think commercially and are committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for clients.
We are a collaborative, down-to-earth firm that combines skilled excellence with a genuine commitment to our people and our clients.
About the Role
This is a senior position for a lawyer who can operate autonomously, exercise sound commercial judgment and take ownership of both their matters and the development of the practice.
You will manage a diverse and interesting caseload, provide strategic and commercially focused advice, cultivate strong client relationships and play an active role in generating new business. You will also lead and support team members, contribute to the development of the practice and identify opportunities to expand the firm's services and market presence.
We are looking for someone who understands that success in private practice extends beyond technical legal ability. The ideal candidate will be commercially minded, solutions-focused and capable of balancing excellent client service with sustainable practice growth.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial & Business Law
Advising on business sales and acquisitions, mergers and acquisitions,
business structuring and commercial transactions.
Drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts and documentation, including shareholders' agreements, unitholders' agreements, partnership agreements, franchise agreements and joint venture arrangements.
Advising businesses, directors, executives and shareholders on commercial, corporate, governance and risk management issues.
Managing contractual disputes, assessing litigation risks and developing commercially appropriate strategies.
Advising on commercial property transactions, complex subdivisions, disposals, easements, strata and building-related matters.
Commercial Leasing
Drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial leases and associated documentation.
Advising landlords, tenants, business owners and other stakeholders on commercial leasing matters.
Identifying and managing legal and commercial risks while working towards practical outcomes for clients.
Preparing wills, powers of attorney, enduring guardianship appointments and other estate planning documents.
Advising on succession planning and estate-related matters.
Managing estate administration, including probate, letters of administration and the administration of deceased estates.
Advising and acting in disputed estates matters and estate litigation, including negotiation, dispute resolution and litigation where required.
Leadership, Business Development & Practice Growth
Leading, mentoring and developing team members to support a high-performing practice.
Building and maintaining strong relationships with existing clients, referral partners and professional networks.
Proactively identifying and pursuing business development opportunities to grow the practice and generate new work.
Developing your own client base and contributing to the firm's broader growth objectives.
Managing your own files and workload while maintaining high standards of legal work, responsiveness and client service.
Contributing to strategic planning, practice development and the continued success of Foye Legal.
Keeping abreast of legislative developments and emerging issues relevant to clients and the practice.
About You
You are an accomplished lawyer with the confidence and capability to manage complex matters, build trusted client relationships and take a leadership role within a growing practice.
You are commercially astute, solutions-focused and comfortable working autonomously.
You understand the importance of business development and enjoy building qualified networks, identifying opportunities and developing lasting referral relationships.
Importantly, you are looking for more than your next legal position. You want the opportunity to take ownership, influence the direction of a practice and progress towards a senior leadership role.
You will ideally bring:
At least five years' post-admission experience, with substantial experience in commercial and business law and/or estates law.
Strong technical knowledge and drafting skills across relevant areas of practice.
Demonstrated ability to manage complex matters independently and exercise sound legal and commercial judgment.
Excellent communication, negotiation, advocacy and problem-solving skills.
A proven ability to develop and maintain strong client and referral relationships.
Commercial awareness and an appreciation of the financial and operational drivers of a successful legal practice.
The ability to lead, mentor and support colleagues while fostering a collaborative team environment.
Robust organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities without compromising quality or service.
A proactive approach to business development and a genuine interest in growing a practice.
Alignment with Foye Legal's values of authenticity, mastery, professionalism and respectfulness.
An established local profile and existing client or referral relationships would be advantageous, but we are equally interested in a candidate with the capability and drive to develop these.
At Foye Legal, we believe a successful firm is built on talented people who feel valued, supported and empowered to do their best work.
We offer a friendly, professional and collaborative environment where your contribution matters, your ideas are welcomed and your career development is taken seriously.
Benefits include, amongst others:
A competitive remuneration package commensurate with experience.
A genuine pathway to Director for the right candidate.
The opportunity to lead and grow an established area of practice.
Support and collaboration from experienced senior practitioners.
Learning and development opportunities to support career progression.
Regular team meetings, social events and team-building activities.
Supportive management and a values-driven workplace.
Take the Next Step in Your Career
If you are an experienced commercial and estates lawyer ready to take on greater responsibility, lead a team and build towards a future leadership role, we would welcome a confidential conversation.
This is an opportunity to bring your experience and ambition to an established firm, build on an existing practice and help shape what comes next.
