Role Overview
This role sits between Ignition's platform and the people who need it to do something.
As Product
Owner, you will work out what the business and our clients need, understand what the platform can and can't do, and turn the gap between the two into clear, prioritised work the engineering team can build.
You will be part of the product team, working closely with design, engineering, and business stakeholders.
You own the product backlog: deciding what gets built next, writing requirements and user stories that leave no room for guesswork, and keeping everyone aligned on priorities, timelines, and the reasons behind them.
This is a hands-on role that needs real technical depth. You won't be writing code, but you need to understand the platform's architecture, capabilities, and limitations well enough to know when an idea is feasible, when it isn't, and what it will really take.
It suits someone who has worked as a consultant or contractor on a technology platform, and is used to stepping into complex environments, getting up to speed quickly, and translating what people ask for into something a platform can actually deliver.
Your Responsibilities
- Own and prioritise the product backlog, balancing platform improvements, business and client needs, and the team's capacity, and be able to explain the reasoning behind every priority call.
- Build and maintain a deep understanding of the platform's architecture, capabilities, and limitations, and use it to shape what gets built and how.
- Translate business and client needs into clear, testable requirements, epics, and user stories that engineers can build from without guesswork.
- Act as the main link between technical teams and business stakeholders,
making sure both sides understand the same thing in the same way.
- Work with UI/UX designers and engineers to make sure designs and technical solutions are feasible and make the most of the platform before work starts.
- Lead the evaluation of prototypes and proofs of concept, testing that they are practical and fit the platform before they move into full development.
- Use platform insights, client feedback, and targeted usability testing to understand how customers actually experience the product, whether they're getting advice on their own or with an adviser, and feed what you learn back into the backlog.
- Keep stakeholders and the team up to date on progress, timelines, and roadblocks, raising problems early rather than at the deadline.
- Help the team get better at how it works, turning learnings from retrospectives into real changes to process and practice.
You will bring
- Experience working as a consultant or contractor on a technology platform, across different clients or projects.
- Demonstrated experience as a Product Owner of a commercially successful product.
- A solid grasp of software architecture and how platforms fit together, so you can judge feasibility and trade-offs for yourself.
- Comfort stepping into complex technical environments and getting up to speed quickly.
You learn a platform in depth and become the person others come to with questions.
- Clear communication with non-technical stakeholders. You can explain a complex technical concept, or why something can't be done the way it was asked, in terms people can act on.
- Experience working with UI/UX teams and judging whether a design is feasible before it reaches build.
- The ability to manage several pieces of work at once in a fast-paced environment without losing sight of priorities.
- A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent expertise.
Desirable
- Experience in financial services, wealth management, or advice technology.
- Experience working in Agile Scrum teams, using tools such as Jira and Confluence.
- Experience working with clients across AU, UK, or EU markets.
On any given day you might…
- Review a set of requirements a peer has written and help tighten them up ahead of sprint planning.
- Reprioritise the backlog after new client feedback or a shift in business need, then explain the change to the team and stakeholders.
- Sit with engineers to evaluate a prototype and decide whether it's ready to move into build.
- Talk through a new feature idea with an engineer to work out whether the platform can support it and what it would really take.
- Turn a loosely worded business request into user stories with clear acceptance criteria.
- Watch a usability session and spot where customers get stuck in a journey.
- Lead a demonstration for a client, then work with the project or product manager on what comes next.
- Bring a process improvement to a retrospective and own making it happen.
