Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Emergency team at Veterinary Specialist Services (VSS) Carrara as an Emergency Veterinarian.

Working within our busy 24-hour specialist and emergency referral hospital, you will provide high-quality emergency assessment, stabilisation and treatment to a diverse range of small animal patients. You will manage emergency presentations ranging from acute medical and surgical cases through to critically unwell and complex patients requiring intensive monitoring and intervention.

You will work closely with our experienced emergency nurses, specialists, residents, interns and wider hospital team to ensure patients receive timely, coordinated and compassionate care.

The role will involve:

- Emergency triage, assessment and stabilisation of patients.
- Managing a diverse caseload of emergency medical and surgical presentations.
- Developing appropriate diagnostic and treatment plans.

- Performing emergency procedures and providing critical care when required.
- Communicating clearly and compassionately with pet owners regarding their pet's condition, treatment options and prognosis.
- Working collaboratively with specialist teams when patients require referral or ongoing specialist care.
- Providing explicit and thorough clinical handovers and medical records.
- Supporting and mentoring veterinary nurses, interns and less experienced clinicians.
- Working within VSS clinical protocols and maintaining high standards of patient safety and care.
- Contributing to a positive, collaborative and supportive emergency team environment.

This role would suit a veterinarian who enjoys the variety and challenge of emergency medicine, thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about delivering excellent patient and client care.

- Veterinary degree and current registration to practise in Australia.
- Previous experience working in a small animal veterinary hospital, preferably in an emergency or high-acuity environment.
- Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic and patient management skills.
- Confidence managing emergency presentations and critically unwell patients.
- Excellent communication skills with both clients and veterinary team members.
- Ability to remain calm, organised and professional in high-pressure situations.
- Strong clinical judgement and the ability to prioritise competing cases.
- Excellent documentation and handover skills.
- Commitment to patient welfare, clinical standards and continuing professional development.

You're the kind of person who:

- Is passionate about emergency and critical care.
- Remains calm and focused when faced with challenging or rapidly changing situations.
- Enjoys working as part of a multidisciplinary team and values the contribution of nurses and support staff.
- Communicates openly and respectfully with colleagues and clients.
- Takes ownership of cases while knowing when to seek support or elevate care.
- Is compassionate and understands the emotional impact emergency situations can have on pet owners.
