About the NSW Ombudsman
Government agencies touch and impact the lives of the people of NSW every day, and we are there to make sure those interactions are fair. Government is complex and people need to have confidence that someone is holding government agencies to account if their actions are unreasonable, wrong or unlawful.
We are that someone. We are the organisation that shines a light on serious wrong conduct in the delivery of government services. Our ultimate goal is that everyone receives the right services and fair treatment from the agencies we oversight.
Our scope is broad. We cover services for vulnerable families, including the delivery of community services funded by government; local councils; correctional and youth justice centres; education; setting protection and public transport – to name a few!
We work to help resolve problems at an individual level, as well as looking at the bigger picture to promote system improvements in public administration and in the delivery of community services. We are confident in the knowledge that our work will give voice to the individual and bring fairness and balance to how the government delivers to the public it serves.
We are committed to providing a range of career development opportunities. We aim to guide and help our people with the skills they need to lead our organisation and give the most impact to what they do.
The role
- Lead the Data Analytics Unit, with up to 6 reports across analytics, engineering and business analysis. Report to the Director, Strategy, Governance, Risk and Data.
- Deliver analysis that supports complaints handling, investigations and executive decisions, identifying trends, emerging issues and opportunities to improve services.
- Provide technical leadership and contribute hands-on when needed, reviewing analysis, data models and pipelines to ensure outputs are accurate, reliable and reusable.
- Automate KPI and reporting processes, moving reporting from local files onto a central platform and reducing manual effort.
- Develop Power BI reporting, improving operational dashboards and building towards executive and board-level dashboards.
- Improve data quality following the new ERP rollout, resolving inconsistencies between old and new systems and strengthening confidence in reporting.
- Oversee the survey program and stakeholder feedback, using findings to improve services and potentially introduce more timely feedback.
- Manage priorities and develop the team, balancing ongoing reporting, project work and ad hoc requests while maintaining appropriate privacy and security controls.
About You
- Strong SQL and analytical capability - the highest priority. Able to interrogate data systematically, identify quality issues, challenge findings and review the team’s technical work.
- Power BI and reporting capability - experience delivering dashboards, KPI reporting and automation that help operational teams and executives make decisions. Python is used by the team, so familiarity would be valuable.
- Proven people management - at least one substantive team management role, including coaching, performance management and developing technical staff.
- Excellent stakeholder communication - able to explain technical findings clearly to non-technical leaders, understand business needs and provide practical advice.
- Robust judgement and delivery skills - comfortable working independently,
prioritising competing requests and maintaining quality under tight deadlines.
- Sound development practices - experience with version control, collaborative development, testing, documentation and peer review.
- Data modelling and engineering oversight - experience directing or supervising data integration, pipelines and data structures, with enough technical depth to guide delivery and troubleshoot issues.
- Modern cloud data platform experience. Azure is preferred, but experience with another cloud platform is acceptable.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in data analytics, research, policy analysis or a related discipline.
