Role Overview:

Support laser and radiation safety across research labs and product development environments. Ensure employees, equipment, and experiments meet safety standards for lasers, LEDs, and X‑ray radiation.

This role combines hands-on lab inspections, safety testing, hazard calculations, equipment reviews, and compliance documentation. The ideal candidate has direct Laser Safety Officer (LSO) experience and a strong understanding of laser safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

- Inspect labs for laser and radiation safety compliance.
- Evaluate equipment, hardware designs, and R&D; experiments for safety risks.
- Perform laser and LED testing, measurements, and exposure hazard calculations.
- Review, create, and approve safety procedures and documentation.
- Conduct X‑ray leakage surveys and audit X‑ray safety training and procedures.
- Investigate safety issues and equipment failures; recommend corrective actions.
- Verify equipment safety through testing and simulated fault conditions.
- Coordinate with engineers, researchers, technicians, and other teams.
- Support additional EHS programs, including chemical, electrical, laboratory, and machine safety.
- Travel between Bay Area labs and other locations as needed.

Required Qualifications:

- Direct Laser Safety Officer (LSO) experience.
- Strong knowledge of ANSI Z136.1 laser safety standards.
- Bachelor's degree in Physics, Optical Sciences, Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent direct LSO/RSO experience may substitute for the degree.
- Experience with lasers, LEDs, and X‑ray radiation sources.




- Background in technical testing, engineering, failure analysis, or safety investigations.
- Ability to assess hazards, perform technical analysis, and develop corrective actions.
- Robust communication, technical writing, and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Knowledge of FDA/CDRH laser safety requirements and IEC 60825-1 and IEC 62471-1 standards.
- Experience calculating Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE), Nominal Ocular Hazard Distance (NOHD), and Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ).
- Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO) credential.
- Experience in hardware R&D; or manufacturing environments.
- Ability to influence cross-functional teams and drive safety compliance.
