Help shape a future where rural communities can access the care and support they need.
Some Board decisions are felt far beyond the boardroom. In rural communities, they help determine whether quality healthcare and community support remain accessible, connected and close to home.
Northern District Community Health (NDCH) invites applications from experienced leaders and suitably skilled individuals to join our Board as a Non-Executive Director, contributing to the strategic direction, governance and long-term sustainability of an established, independent not-for-profit community health organisation.
About Northern District Community Health
For more than 35 years, NDCH has worked alongside rural communities across northern Victoria to improve health, wellbeing and access to essential services.
With over 100 local staff and 150 volunteers, we deliver a broad range of integrated health and community services across Gannawarra, Buloke and Loddon Shires and into Swan Hill.
Our services bring together primary care, community nursing, allied health, mental health and counselling, health promotion, aged care and practical community support.
We believe that where people live should not determine their ability to access quality care. Our role extends beyond delivering services to strengthening the health, independence and connectedness of the communities we serve.
An key time to join our Board
NDCH is entering an important new chapter.
Following a period of organisational growth, leadership renewal and strengthened governance, we are building on firmer foundations and preparing for our next strategic horizon.
With our Strategic Plan 2027–2032 under development, the Board has an important role in shaping how NDCH responds to changing community needs, evolving health systems, workforce challenges and the financial realities of delivering care in rural communities.
We are seeking a Director who can bring independent thinking, sound judgement and constructive challenge to the Board as we translate strategic priorities into sustainable outcomes.
This is an opportunity to contribute to decisions that will shape the future of rural community health.
The opportunity
As a Non-Executive Director, you will contribute to the collective stewardship of NDCH, working collaboratively with fellow Directors and executive leadership to:
- Guide and oversee organisational strategy, long-term sustainability and performance.
- Provide sound financial, risk and governance oversight.
- Uphold quality, safety, accountability and responsible stewardship of resources.
- Support informed decision-making that balances community needs with organisational capability.
- Bring independent perspectives and constructive challenge to Board and Committee deliberations.
What you will bring
We are particularly interested in candidates who can strengthen the Board's collective capability in strategic and financial stewardship and/or health sector expertise.
Relevant experience may include finance, commercial leadership, organisational strategy, primary or community healthcare, clinical governance, aged care, disability services or other complex service environments.
Above all, we value people who demonstrate:
- Strategic thinking, sound judgement and integrity.
- Financial literacy and the confidence to ask informed questions.
- An understanding of good governance, accountability and risk.
- Collaborative leadership and respect for diverse perspectives.
- A genuine commitment to equitable access to rural healthcare and community wellbeing.
Previous Board experience is welcomed but is not essential. We recognise that senior leadership, professional expertise, community contribution and lived experience can provide valuable, transferable capabilities.
Appointment and commitment
This is a voluntary, non-executive Board appointment,
with a small stipend paid for attendance at Board and Committee meetings.
Board-appointed Directors may serve for a term of up to three years.
The commitment includes at least nine Board meetings annually, participation in one or more Board Committees, strategic planning activities and the Annual General Meeting.
Meetings are held at NDCH locations, with virtual attendance options available. Directors are supported through tailored induction and ongoing governance development.
Diversity of perspective strengthens governance
NDCH values the different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives that Directors bring to collective decision-making.
We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds and particularly welcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants and people who live in, understand or have strong connections to rural and regional Victoria.
