Smithfield

Own the whole HR function, not a slice of someone else's.

HEQS Wholesale Group is an Australian family-owned business trading over 20 years - a market leader in furniture and white goods, importing and distributing through warehouses in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Right now our hiring and people work is spread across the Managing Director and senior managers. We're consolidating it into one role, reporting directly to the MD, supported by two offshore assistants who carry the routine processing.

Be clear-eyed about what this is

We have under 30 people onsite. That isn't enough for a pure HR job five days a week, and we'd rather say so now than have you find out in month two. This is a genuine all-rounder role - broadly two thirds HR and recruitment, one third office coordination.

If you want a narrow specialist seat inside a big corporate HR team, this isn't it. If you want to own a function end to end, be the person everyone comes to, and build the processes yourself rather than inherit someone else's, you'll like it here.

What you'll own

- Recruitment, brief to signed offer. Agree the real must-haves with the hiring manager, set the criteria your offshore team filters against, quality-check the shortlist, and run first-round interviews for warehouse, admin and junior operational roles. Managers keep technical assessment on specialist roles.
- Onboarding and induction. Everything that happens in the building - a proper Day One, site and safety orientation, first-week check-ins and 30/60/90-day reviews. You'll build induction materials so the process stops living in someone's head.
- Offboarding and compliance. We don't have a documented exit process and we want one: notice periods, final pay and entitlements under the Fair Work Act and NES, exit interviews, equipment and access return, records retention and a clean handover to payroll. You'll design it, then own it.
- People records. Personnel files, contracts and variations, licence and certification expiry tracking, contractor status, and the leave and attendance records that feed payroll.
- The bridge between management and the floor. The person staff actually talk to - surfacing problems early rather than after they've escalated,

and sitting in on the difficult conversations on both sides.
- Office coordination. Systems access and account administration, shared drives and documentation, supplier coordination, and the onshore quality check on payroll inputs so that function isn't dependent on one person offshore.

What you'll need

- 3+ years' hands-on HR experience in an Australian workplace - enough that you've handled real contracts, terminations and entitlements yourself, not just administered someone else's.
- Working knowledge of the Fair Work Act, NES entitlements and the Australian termination process. You'll be making these calls from week one.
- Full-cycle recruitment - job ad to signed contract, not just resume screening.
- Disciplined with records and process. This is as much a documentation job as a people job. Contracts, entitlements, termination paperwork and personnel files all have to be right, written down and defensible.
- Genuinely happy across both HR and office administration. Some days it's running an interview or a difficult conversation; other days it's fixing a filing system or chasing a licence renewal. Both matter here.
- Current valid work rights in Australia, and a Smithfield commute you're happy with five days a week.

Highly regarded

Supervising others or managing remote team members; payroll exposure; a family-owned or SME background rather than only corporate HR; designing an HR process from scratch; grievance and workplace conflict handling; retail, wholesale or logistics experience.

What we offer

$70,000 - $80,000 plus superannuation, depending on experience. A direct line to the Managing Director. Two offshore assistants working five to six days a week to carry the administrative load. Real ownership of Australian HR compliance, employee relations and our exit process. No layer of bureaucracy between you and a decision.

Staff discounts across our furniture and appliance range. A reliable family-owned business in a genuine growth phase.

To apply

Send your resume with a short note on one full-cycle recruitment you personally ran, start to finish, in an Australian workplace - including how you decided which candidates were worth the hiring manager's time. That's what we read first.

HEQS Wholesale Group acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we live and work, and pays our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We are an equal-chance employer and warmly encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and from veterans and ex-Australian Defence Force personnel.
